Century Optics or Red Eye Wide-Angle Lens

I've been looking at their .5x and .7 Wide Angle Lenses. Red Eye (while in UK) is cheaper, and from what I hear, also sells light weight gear. Century Optics, however, is a name I've come to trust.

Is there an advantage to either company's lens? Can I still use my UV filter? (hint: that's always important :) )

I have a Red Eye and really like it. It's small, lightweight, and comes with a surprisingly handy leather case. The case attaches to your beltloop, so your lens is always easily available. Simple matter to attach (screws on like a filter), but I don't think you can use a UV filter simultaneously.

I took my Red Eye to Guatemala recently and was pleased with the results.

Hmmmm...

That still makes me wonder how you didn't over expose without a UV filter. Or did you have mattebox filters?

It doesn't look like the cameras ND filters are kicked on, and I haven't had consistent results with the shutter speeds outdoors.

Is there a hole in the ozone layer of Nebraska? Excessive methane gas perhaps?

No problems with overexposure. I think that's just a matter of adjusting the iris and ND filter as necessary. For this shot I probably engaged the ND filter. That's usually necessary on a bright, sunny day.

The red-eye is a non zoom through lense. I have the .5x model and I love it. Got it for around 200 bucks used. It's light, compact, and super wide. I haven't used the Century, although I assume that it's an excellent piece of glass, just like everything else they make.

I own a the red eye .7. I have been pleased with it so far. It's not zoom through, but it's small/light enough so I can use it with the lens hood attached. The century is too large to use with some lens hoods/matte boxes.

i have a century 0.6x (half zoom through). great lens for the money (paid it 350$ 1 yr ago)..
great fast bayonet mount, it doesn't had a filter thread though. but i guess the light loss with a polarizer on it would become a bit too much.. also a polarizer of that size would cost almost as much as the lens..

I didn't see the Red Eye .5x Wide Angle Lens for the DVX on their website, but I'll trust you know what you own.

*snickers*

Is there any advantage to owning .5x and a .7x wide angle lens, or is the difference nominal?

Unfortunately, I don't think RedEye makes the 0.5x any more for the DVX. You you either get the 0.7x or search for a used 0.5x.

BTW, even though the 0.7x is non zoom-through, you can still use a little zoom (just not all the way to Z99).
