DVDA2, too large file, shrink, and Flicker!

Okay... Doing a project for friend... (Vegas 5.0, DVDA 2)

All the footage (over 2-3 hours of NTSC DV --NOT 24p) rendered out to several mpeg2's, is LARGE...

And DVDArchitect 2 says it's too large; around 6.1 GB.

I rendered/authored it out anyhow, but it only compressed it to 5.something...

So I used DVD Shrink to make it down to 4.7...

But when I play it on my TV, the menu image flickers real bad...

So, what's causing this, at what point did this problem arise?

KJ

ps. maybe I should render to DVDA2 template 24p... Maybe that would reduce size to under 4.7?

What flickers actually? Fonts in the menu?- Increase font size over 14px.

What's the data rate of the mpegs?

(been away 2 days, sorry no reply!)

The image (jpg) that is used as the menu background flickers on the tv.
It has text on it as part of the jpeg, but that doesn't really flicker, but the actor's face does... I rendered out my opening video, then saved the last frame as a full quality jpeg, took it into photoshop, added text, then in DVDA, put that jpeg as the menu background. That way, when the video stops, it blends rather seamlessly into the menu pic... at least in the past that's how it's always worked.

The data rate was set to the default settings when I rendered to mpeg2 in Vegas.

Another question though: isn't one of the primary jobs of DVD authoring software to shrink stuff to fit on the DVD size of your choice? Otherwise, what's the point? (yeah, I know; authoring the 'look' of the DVD) Still, it certainly should be able to shrink the data to fit 4.7GB. It seems ridiculous that I should have to use Shrink to get it down to 4.7!

Well, I was able to edit out alot of material, so as to reduce the size of the mpeg2's, and NOT have to use Shrink at all...

...so I used DVDA2 to author (all the mpeg's where rendered using the "DVD Architect NTSC DV" template) the DVD.

And still, the damn menu image flickers!!! Not the text area of the pic/menu image, but rather, the area that has the character's face. (buttons flicker that are near his face also!)

This makes no sense whatsoever... The image is a jpeg I did in photoshop. Why would only part of the image flicker?

Would the color of the image have anything to do with this? (and WHY would it?) The image is greyed out/desaturated, and everything EXCEPT the actor's face was blurred. But that was in Photoshop, and as I said, the pic was output as a jpeg. Why would only part of it flicker once burnt to DVD??? (and BTW, it flickers in both menus where it's used!)

Well, I figured it out... interlaced jpeg!

This footage I was dealing with was 29.97 interlaced... NOT 24p progressive. Thus, the jpeg I rendered from Photoshop (which was a still, saved from the timeline in Vegas) and was set in DVDA2 as the menu screen, WAS CAUSING THE FLICKER!

I didn't realize that the 'interlace' was 'maintained' or kept the whole way through with a jpeg image; saving from Vegas, altering in Photoshop, saving in Photoshop (as another jpeg, of course), then rendering yet again in DVDA2! The DVD menu always looked fine until I burned it out...and that's when it would flicker! So in Photoshop, I chose filter>video>de-interlace, and that fixed it.

Doesn't that seem unncessary? Somewhere along that chain of processing, wouldn't one think the interlace would be removed and a 'full' picture image would be created? Lot's of time wasted on this one!
