How do I capture and edit 25p?

Hi all. New to Final Cut and just got my DVX a couple of days ago and need some advice; that is, how do I capture 25p footage and edit it correctly without screwing anything up?

There are the normal presets for PAL DV which are set up for 50i but I'm not sure that's what I use. My thinking is that the 25p on the DVX is stored as 50i, so if I just capture using regular 50i settings and edit on a 50i timeline (Using easy setup PAL DV) then I should be OK. Is this correct thinking?

If not, what's the best way to do it? Do I need to change the field order of the captured clips and the timeline?

Finally, once edited and I want to output to, say, DVD (PAL) do I need to do anything special? I'm thinking here it's just plain simple - just render out to PAL DVD format using Compressor.

Cheers
Aaron

BTW: I did Google and search here, but no luck, so if you have some threads already, it'd be great to see them.

I would also like to know the answer to this question, but for Final Cut Express. Information on 25p is rather thin on the ground. Did you have any luck in getting an answer to your question?

Well yes you can edit in the pal mode and you will not have any problems. The DVX recordes the 25p in a 50I stream. So it will edit the same. But if you captured and removed the pull down then now you have 25p footage so you need to edit in a 25p time line. So in this case you need to set up your project manually. You can do this by going Final Cut Pro > Audio Video Settings and then go to Squence > settings and make shure everything is right with frame rates and all of that.

My concern is that if I edit 25p as 50i, transitions, such as fading between two shots will render interlaced. Is this correct?

I'm really hoping to use a DVX100BE with Final Cut Express.

And just to be 100% clear, Final Cut Express supports that option?

Sorry to labour the point, but I don't want to buy software that won't do the job.

Thanks.

Should do as far as I know read the specs before you buy. FCP express as far as I know has everything FCP does except certain filters.

Set the field order where? In the sequence settings? If I did that, wouldn't I tell FCP to deinterlace the footage? I mean it will go "Hmm, it's a non interlaced timeline, but I have 50i fotoage (It doesn't know it was shot progressive) so I'll deinterlace that"

I did notice something weird over the weekend. I shot progressive, but when I added some slow mo, it got all interlacy.

This is really frustrating that noone seems to know the answer to this! ;) And I can't test it, cause eyeballing is almost impossible to tell really.

If you shot interlaced work in an interlaced timeline if you shot progressive work in a progressive timeline.

I've decided FCE will fit my needs for now, my project doesn't require any complex effects, just basic cuts and fades, so interlacing on rendered sections shouldn't be too much of an issue. Not ideal, but Express is under 1/4 price of Studio (£199 v £899 inc. Tax in the UK).

Its stored 50i but edited 25p. So 25 FPS timeline with no field order.

OK, but won't this cause FC to deinterlace? If I put a non progressive cam's footage on a 25p timeline, it will be deinterlaced won't it? Because it's being told the timeline is progressive but it's been given interlaced footage. The DVX is no different except for the time when the fields were shot. That is the confusing part for me.

Assuming you're right, then if I want to print to tape again, so this thing is going to be *stored* interlaced on tape (Not actually interlaced of course) then is there anything I need to do?

Hmm, yeah interlaced artifacts sound nasty but I guess they can be lived with for small things. I noticed on a shoot I did the other day that they became apparent during edit where I put a slow mo feature on some part of a footage. The slow mo parts looked like they "re-interlaced"

That said, there must be a way to fix all this crap. My sample count of people with experience is very low to know what's really the way to go.

I went for Final Cut Studio in the end. Still not got my DVX just yet (though I hope to have soon). How has your 25p editing worked out?

Hi guys,

I'm starting a job this week with DVX. Although I have quite a background with video and even, HD, i have never had the chance to capture from it before.

I read all your posts here but still i don't realize how should i capture from it. It wil be shot in 25p. The switch to enable advanced pulldown is grayed out. I suppose that's because it only works in 29.97 fps. I even tried to set new presets for capture and sequence. I saw no difference in quality and no scan lines.

So should I just use the DV-PAL 48khz preset? And then setting my footage and my sequence preset to no field order?

Thank you for any advice you might give me.

Btw, i have FCP Studio 5.1.

Cheers,

Edu

Setting the field order to none will (probably but nor surely) give you problems when you playback the footage on a TV... A good solution is to set the sequence to DV easy setup and setting the codec options for DV to "progressive" and not for "interlaced" in the sequence settings... (You need QT7 to do this)
