Sound Matching: Hyper and Shotgun pairs

I understand that certain mics produce a certain kind of sound but what I was curious about is are there certain pairs of mics (shotgun and Hyper) that you find match well? I have an Oktava and will be getting a 416 in the next few weeks but I also wanted to get another Hyper maybe in the 500-1,000 dollar range. I just wanted to make sure that the tonal qualities are similar. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

If you're getting another hyper, I would recommend you either get another Octava or go all the way and spend the ~$1500 or so and get the Schoeps. There are certainly decent hypers in the price range you're looking at, but for a little more, you can get what is considered the best by most. Or stick with what is generally considered second best by most.

That's the Schoeps CMC641 right? I was looking at that one this morning. It looks like I'll have the money to buy it so I might as well. I know that five years down the line my camera will probably need to be replaced but at least I can build a somewhat bulletproof sound kit with a 416 and a schoeps in there. I have to say though, that CMIT 5U is really tempting me. I need to read more user comments on that one though and unfortunatley those seem to be hard to come by. I've really only found one review so far and it was the one posted on Schoeps own website so of course it'd be favorable. To sum it up, the review said that the CMIT made the 416 seem dated.

Gorilla,

Don't forget that it is both the CMC6 and the MK41 (this is why you will see it referred to as the Schoeps 641).

i will vote for the 641 as the ultimate , but you can find the akg 480/63 or mbho with 500 does it almost the same for half of the sum what might solve the matching issue by buying a couple .
or you can add another oktava and buy better shot gun - sc-3 sanken

oleg and quite a few others rate the cs3e even higher than the sanken. i cant say anything too definite as i havent used both, to answer your question, the cs3e smokes the 416. (well, i think so)

Why does everyone obsess about the 416 so much if there's better mic's for only a couple hundred more? Is it just nostalgia or something?

then schoeps since cs-3 is sanken :-)

probably yes , but every one has their preference for the what they like , i like the 416 very much but i dont use it any more since i found something i like more , in europe the difference in price is 500 between these 2 ,the 416 is overpriced in the states

I'm at a bit of a disadvantage here since my location really prevents me from being able to hear these mics for myself in person. Let me ask this flat out though, Let's say you had 2,000.00 for a shotgun and 1,600.00 for a Hyper. Which mics would you get? The consensus seems to be the Schoeps for the hyper, but I'm really interested to hear about the shotguns.

As a bit of a side question, have any of you guys had any hands on time with the CMIT 5U?

if you are in location that you dont have any back up around ill suggest you buy 416 as i dont know more reliable mic .
as for the sound i checked my cs-3 to the CMIT 5U schoeps in hard urban condition whith allot of side noise , it was much superior for this kind of job and has much better side rejection , the actual mic sound is more depends what you like .
for interiors i use schoepses and have mbho ,i like the schoepses more but not as much i was putting down twice the sum today for the mic
but if you have the money go with the schopes , add cut 1( lo cut unit) and swivel . it will bring you to 2200 but it will give you much better tool

ah, sorry, wasnt concentrating there oleg, yes, of course, SANKEN cs3e, SCHOEPS cmit-5U.

who wants a baby blue mic anyway.. :)

Gorilla, if you are really gonna plunk that money down on mics, you should really test them out. Talk to your dealer to get a rental for a week to test them out. Many dealers will just charge you shipping if you are going to spend that kind of dough.

I think both Oleg and I just said this in another post recently, the CMIT is a very overpriced mic. Really only suited to mixers that have some money to burn. It's a great mic (just got to play with one on set last week) but if I were putting a kit together i would use the extra dough to get a second boom pole or maybe the collette cable for the MK41.

Just one man's opinion

oleg/exile, i keep wondering, do you really need the cut-1 when you have a 442 mixer and you can do so much to control the hi-pass on the mixer itself?

i know on the 302 i could only do the staight 80hz cut but with the 442 i have a huge range and as i get closer to buying a schoeps i keep wondering if i really need the cut-1

are you close to selling any of your mics as that german brand you mention can't be gotten in the U.S. and i even emailed the distributor and manufactuer to see where to get them and nobody has gotten back to me.
