Original version of Star Wars Trilogy to be released on DVD

IMDB's news wire is often inaccurate but the intended release still shows fan contempt. Ah well. I am not enough of a Star Wars fan to want to get a laserdisc widescreen version on DVD from Lucas for full price. I'd go to Malaysia first.

Do you think any of you would do differently if you were in Lucas position, if you were presented the opportunity to make more money on an idea? Im sure many of you wouldnt pass that up.

Whether or not I buy the new release in september wont affect Lucas. Im going to buy it just because its nice to have the originals untouched, where I can be reminded that at one point it took a lot of talent to make a movie - not just the talent to hire a bunch of cg animators.

Make more money on an idea--sure...that's the whole point. He could release the originals in pristine format and make lots of money. I dont see how it could hurt him beyond the fact that it would perpetuate the originals--and since he is releasing the laser discs he isnt that fussy about trying to erase the originals from memory. Perhaps he does plan to release them in pristine DVD format--once BluRay or HD takes hold and the format is obsolete.

More likely it's because the original 35mm prints of the theatrical runs had deteriorated almost into nothing, and when they restored them they only restored them into the Special Editions. So for a pristene DVD transfer of the originals would take substantial time and money. Now I personally believe that it should be done for history if nothing else, but that's why we're getting the laserdisc transfers. Those are quite litterally the highest quality original versions that exist in the world.

Bad news . . .

These DVDs are going to be non-anamorphic, and they're the transfers done for the 1993 laserdisc editions.

I don't think Lucas is a greedy bastard. I just think he's isolated, insulated, and weird.
