29 months, and my dvx100 sort of packs it in

I just shipped my camera off to san diego to have an underwater housing made. It was fine when I sent it off, when i got it back it wasnt. There was this horrible grinding/buzzing sound in between the focus/zoom ring every time i used manual zoom, or messed with the auto focus. So they stripped my camera today at an authorized repair center and told me the bad news, the "full lens unit" needs to be replaced. With labour a rough estimation is $1550. I asked if it could have been from shipping but they said its most likely due to natural wear and tear. It has like 330 hours on it, of course now it won't focus at all. The custom water housing builder deny's everything, saying it was fine when it left. I received my camera 3 weeks later, in an air tight water housing, with the battery attached. so for 3 weeks it sat in the water housing. Of course the holder blind sheet which is the plastic piece that slides with the ND switch was broke at the time, I asked the custom housing guys to be careful and they said it would be a sinch.

So why is it that I get my camera back and its got damage that I find it hard to believe that it is from natural causes?

1500, I might as well get a new camera, warranty is not an option, and who knows what else happened to it in the states.

What would some of you do if anything, in this situation?

After swearing and screaming I'd probably cry.

Then I'd vow to kill everyone involved.

Then I'd get drunk.

Then I'd wake up in a ditch with blood on my shirt and a mysterious "black spot" in my memory.

Then I'd call a lawyer.

Seriously, that sucks. Sorry to hear it.

You can always rent out the water housing to raise some funds for repair. I know a few people on this board have been looking for one.

Awful news.

with a katana sword and a pirate hat....

you know after using a letus35 my focus ring kinda grinds now too. too much weight on the threads i think.

Yeah due to the circumstances I feel completely helpless and can't see any other option aside from biting the bullet. It's terrible I know, especially seeing how its 2 years old, I would like to cry but I can't. And I need to act quick, I leave for central america in a month for 2 months to finish shooting a surf video. All I can say is being an Indy filmmaker can really be shiity sometimes, I'd rather sacrifice my ideas and become a commercial sellout then have to go through this again.

well just get it fixed. bite the bullet... you need it to finish your film. now you have incentive to make it amzing. and make money off of it.

or drop a few grand more and get a new camera, use it for 2 months, return and then sell it. I'm gutted by this, I'm let down by this camera, starting to question what is so great about it. I guess you get what you pay for, I should have bought something else I 'm thinking, something that doesnt call it quits after only 2 years. It gives great picture, but on the durability side of things I have to say i'm pretty disappointed with panasonic. And I have a right to be.

i seriously think the guys at the shop Dropped it on concrete or somehting. Examine it REALLLLLY closely, are ther any visible scuff marks on it?

Cause alot of guys here have een using DVX100's for like 3 years with minimal trouble.

soumehtings soudns fishy. If i give someone my camera, and i comes back not working.... someone dropped it somehwere. na'mean?

for sure, however proving it isnt easy. They said it was fine when it left, so they can just as easily point the finger at the courier sevice which in this case is USPS. Even the repair center is kinda scratching there heads on this one, not sure how a camera at 300 hours and 2 years can be having this type of problem. Needless to say i'm having them give it a good look over, cuz there could be more than meets the eye in damages.

Your situation really sucks man. This makes me want to get my cam insured asap. I guess that's the best way to safeguard against these things. I definately don't think you made a bad call w/ buying the camera though. Obviously the camera didn't just fall apart. Something had to have happenned. It's been in complete stranger's hands for the better part of a month and it was fine when it left. Hmmm. Sounds a bit fishy. I think you have a right to know what really happenned, but I know plenty of people who have had their cameras for longer than two years.

it is insured, on my tenants policy, and if it has more than what i've been told in damages, then I'm going to file for a replacement. Thats why we insure things, to ensure we don't get financially screwed over. I'll know more in a few hours.oh yeah.

I got the impression from this thread that you were screwed over. Now it seems as if you will be fine. So I'm confused at what you're totally up in arms about.

I was writing this as soon as it happened, but still there is no guarantee that USPS will cover the damage. Plus I'm leaving in a month to complete a film, leaving to Nicaragua and I kind of need my camera for it.

but either way, i'll be paying for it, maybe not as much but what a bloody hassle.

here's a piece of funny news, because it was shipped from San Diego, I have to repack everything the way it was, and it ship it back in order for them to file a claim. So let me see, that means another custom fuk up, more damage in shipping, and probably 2 months of BS before i'll see my camera again. Talk about BS. I need this thing at the end of the month, and so now i'm officially out 1500 for no damn reason aside from USPS's outright ignorance, stupidity, and crap system. Un-farken-believable
