I am looking to a decent field monitor. HD of course, but then again, do I need HD? Also I need an 16:9 as well right? Thanks for the help. Of course bigger is better, but I have like $1,500.00
We bought the Marshall 7"Monitor VR70PHDA for about $1,400. Lots of threads on this monitor on this board. We are very happy with it and it will run all day on one IDX Endura 10S Battery.
That monitor is SD , Doesn't have Blue Gun, weighs about 66 pounds, and doesn't run on DC power. That doesn't seem that easy to use in the field or on lets say a steadicam.
I always see on film Set one of these monitors. I would think that we can get an HD cheaper than what the 7" is selling. If you are shooting is Pakastan and are running From gun fire then I would say yea power, and weight might be an use.. RUN!!!!
But my point was size. I will be Shooting some 51 min instructional DVD about 20 of them, and I am building a set and want something static. and big , but again I thought price would be better than this.
a production monitor will work perfectly fine in the field but the main difference between a production monitor and a field monitor is the field monitor generally has a handle on the top and can be powered via DC , because of this they are normally smaller. If you have access to constant power and don't really have to move the monitor you could probably find something cheaper for viewing HD or at least with a bigger screen for the price
okay so I need a Productions monitor. THFilms: You said a lot of people have these. How do they preform out in the field. and how would these compare to the CRT kind?
The Sony MFM-HT95 HDTV Ready Flat Panel LCD PC/TV Display that THFilms referenced is 1280x1024 and looks good. That's the sort of resolution I would want on location. The Sony PVM-20M2U that SurJones mentioned is still just 600 lines of resolution.

we've used both the Panny 8" and 17".
Both work well...but there is no comparison to the 17".
And it takes AC/DC....just can't beat it.....great to light to...
and the image just blows the clients away.
Varizoom has an 8" HD panel coming out with native Panasonic battery support for around the same price as the Marshall. Looks like a good screen. Supposed to be available sometime next week.
