Huge Blood Spray - Japanese Style

Nothingness

New member
I've been asked to help a friend film a 1970's-era style Kung Fu movie and it calls for alot of blood. The scenes are during fight sequences using swords, knives ect. and he wants the overkill blood spray, seen in alot of Japanese kungfu/ninja/samurai movies...The kind that has a spray of blood at around 5 feet for around 5 seconds. I cannot seem to achieve this technique and would love any tips/suggestions. So far i've tried the pump sprayer thing but this doesn't come close to the amount of spray I need

Thanks for any suggestions.

you could use a small pond pump and tubing,. in line of the tubing clamp on an electric solenoid valve. ( electric valve that opens and closed with a electric switch. also in line AFTER the valve a manual shut off valve that can be variated manually. the manual valve with give you the option to variate the amount of flow throughout the shots. you will need an orifice at the end of the tube to further regulate the final out put.

can anyone suggest a couple flix that use this technique? I've seen Kill BIll and am interested in where tarantino got the inspiration.

All the old Zatoichis have this too along with tons of old kung fu movies but the ones with a lot of swords. I think the 3 evil masters have a lot.

Talking about a huge amount of blood gushing from a wound? Ridiculously so?

The end of Sanjuro has one when Sanjuro and Muroto have their fight.

Pretty much ruined the movie for me. Unless it was supposed to be funny...in which case, it wasn't funny enough.

That is the main scene of the movie as far as what people remember. Too bad it ruined the movie for you, but yes that's exactly the effect i'm talking about..Just a complete blood spray/shower overkill. I really don't mind it at all and it seems to fit in most everything i've seen it in.

Since I posted last, I have figured out how to get this effect and will be filming it soon, i'll post a clip of the scene afterwards.

Well i'm guessing a 100 foot garden hose will hold roughly about a gallon of liquid (the blood)..and I can hook the hose up to air...and put a semi flattened brass piece on the end of the hose to get that fanned out spray effect.

That way I can spray it as I wish, like maybe 2 or 3 sprays at a second or so a piece...or just 1 long spray till the hose empties..

Another way someone told me about was to get sections of garden hose, a 3-way splitter and a compressor. Have 1 hose going to victim, 1 hose to the air (put 1 way valve on hose before connecting it to compressor) and 1 hose to a huge bucket of blood (held in the air so it gravity feeds) whereis it is supposed to work like an airbrush but on a larger scale.

would you consider any of those movies any good?

Hell yeah. I love kung fu joints. Zatoichi is the blind samurai dude that totally kicks ass but his movies have great story behind them. Something like they killed his brother.... heh, just kidding, the kung fu joints are all about the brotherly love.
Zatoichis joints have cool stories and lots-o-blood. Almost anything by the Shaw Brothers is going to be good and have great fight scenes also but they dont use alot of blood.

Same here; I thought it QT who did this first. I'd love to see the source!
This is off topic and cynical but QT never does anything first, haha. He uses alot of inspiration. IE) Reservoir Dogs=The Killing, Four rooms=Twilight Zone, Kill Bill=VERY Kung FU/Grindhouse story telling/dialouge and cinematography. ETC ETC.

Another way to achieve this is:
Gauged hose (A blow in the line could be pretty dangerous)
Heavy duty pump (harbor freight or some old shop vacs have a reverse.)
Reservoir (Empty tank with 2 couplings and hose clamps(also HF))
Gas Valve with handle (home depot has them)

Hang the reservoir like an IV pump on one side and hosing on the other. Prime the tank with what ratio you want for the spray (if you want more distance then blood charge the tank with more air. For more blood then distance charge the tank with more blood) For the end of the hose where the blood is shooting into the air look into welding tips or copper fittings and heat them and hammer them to make whatever pattern you want. Arterial wounds a thicker exit for light wounds a very thin exit. Whatever you want. This way you can exchange the tips for whatever wound you want.
When your ready to spray just pull the valve. Recap since this sounds complicated but isn't.
(pump)--------(tank) valve/---------------threaded Copper tip<
Whole thing should run under $100 and it will be quality custom and can be used 100s of times with consistance. The more you put into the setup the better it will work for you. Use a funnel on the pump side to recharge. Also makes an awesome blast spray for on walls.

Dude you could totally get this by using one of those weed poison tanks. Just connect a longer hose, get a good blood mix, and spray it up!!!

sympathy for mr.vengeance has a great spray scene when a screw driver is pulled out a guy's neck (jugular) looked awesome

ICHI the Killer!!

Has possibly the longest blood spray in cinema history.(I think it actually says that on the dvd cover).

The bugs spray pump should work, but no matter what setup you employ you'll need to do numerous tests as you'll also need to come up with the perfect "thickness" of blood to get a good spray.

Watch "Izo" by Takeshi Miike.

The special features in it cover your topic.

Plus... if you don't know who Takeshi Miike is... well. Let's just say you haven't really begun to experience Cinema's wide range.
