MWave OnTheGo questions...

Hi all... been using my MWave OnTheGo USB2.0 OTG enclosure with a 40 gig drive for a couple weeks and it has been a great in the field solution. Even used it to nab footage from cameras for a client when there was no other option to get the camera close to a computer. Zero issues with reliability. Very happy.

However, just tried to grab footage from 2 4gig cards in the camera at the same time. BIG mistake, as this seems to be MUCH slower than grabbing one card at a time using only one P2 slot. My standard transfer time with a full 4gig card is just under 10 minutes, but putting two cards in raised the total time to somewhere in the range of 30 to 40 minutes for the two cards! P2 slot access is slowed to a standstill. Anyone seen or tried this before?

Also, what happens if you are using a 8gig card and copying over a file that's larger than the Fat32 file system allows? Will the camera automatically break long files when recording? I'd just try it and see what happens, but don't currently have access to an 8gig card for testing.

Regards,

Well I have the MWAVE and it takes about 10 minutes to transfer two 4gig cards at the same time. Though I have a 100gig 7200rpm drive in there.

Thanks for the reply... You're saying you get TWO cards off in 10minutes? How can that be???

My time of one 4gig card in 10minutes was in-line with what Barry was getting, even with his 7200rpm drive. I think he discovered that the drive speed pretty much didn't impact the transfer time.

Wait, when did you buy your enclosure? I know I bought at the same time as Barry... maybe there's some improvements in the last six months.

With Fat32 aren't you limited to only using 32gigs of your 100gig drive when using host mode under USBTOGO?

More confused than ever...

Jim, use SwissKnife to make the whole HD one large partition. You can download it from download.com

A full 4 gig card on my OTG enclosure takes exactly 7 mins 45 secs.

Each card just get placed in its own folder on the drive. I've offloaded a days worth of shooting to it. Over 60gigs worth.

Thanks for the tips, I'll give them a try and report back with my findings.

Yes, when I downloaded both cards they were placed in individual folders, it just took for freakin' ever, even though there wasn't but a couple gigs on each card. Pushing 30 to 40 minutes...

Thanks to Steve's tip about SwissKnife I now have the full use of the drive, and my time to copy a completely full 4gig card was 7min 20sec. Yippee! Too bad the 2card setup was someone elses camera and cards, would like to retest.

Still wondering what would happen with an 8gig card and a larger than 4gig single MXF file... any thoughts?

Thanks mucho,

Would this be another alternative to the MWAVE or no? Also what model enclosure is this and what kind of run times are you getting on the batteries?

Yes this is the OTG enclosure I use and it works perfectly. Its called a Cutie. Batteries have lasted long enough for me so far, though you can get extended by plugging in the car adaptor to recharge it, or buy an external battery like this one.

What does this do exactly? I formatted my drive with my Mac. I'm having no issues and it's pretty fast.
