Creating 2.35:1 footage in post without anamorphic?

How do I go about making my footage 2.35:1 in Premiere after I shoot it? I figure I'll shoot in 4:3 cause that will give me room to slide my footage up or done in post, but how do I get the footage to this ratio?

Or, do I shoot in Letterbox? I'm afraid if I shoot 4:3 and make it 2.35:1 in post that it won't display right on widescreen TVs.

Any input would be very appreciated.
Thanks!

Shoot and compose your shots with a mask simulating the ratio then apply the mask to your export movie. Its only a box around the image when all said in done (if you are not squeezing and unsqueezing as in anamorphic)

Tip : Apply your mask as very last process.

But if its shown on a widescreen TV just with this mask, it wont appear correctly, where as if its done in post as an aspect ratio it will cut off the black thats not needed, correct?

Do a little test : Use Interpret Footage and change the PAR. See if this gives the result you want.

or

Shoot Letterbox which will hard mask your footage and the PAR will be close to what you want. (Test)

There aren't any 2.35:1 PAR in the Interpret footage areas.

If I shoot Letterbox mode, and then use PAR wont it squeeze the footage slightly? Which PAR should I use?

DVD players can't natively play back 2.35:1. They can only handle 16x9 and 4x3. So, if you want 2.35:1 to display properly on a widescreen tv, you need to finish your vid in 16x9. The 16x9 will then be letterboxed to the 2.35:1. This is quite easy to do if you shoot 4x3. Just letterbox it to 2.35:1 in your project. Then when you are done editing, and want to convert aspect ratios, open up the timeline in a 16x9 project, and scale/stretch as needed to properly fill the frame. Burn to DVD, and everything should display correctly.

My first project settings should be 4x3 in Premiere?
So shoot in 4x3 and letterbox to 2.35:1 in my project?
How do I do this? Just create a black mask at the top and bottom?
How do I go about adding one of these in Premiere Pro?
Also how do I make the masks the exact size to make it 2.35:1?

Then, when the video is done and edited with these black masks, import the Sequence into a 16x9 project?

This is all confusing and new, thanks for being so patient.
