Top 10 Films of 1989...

1989...

We lost one of the greatest in Bette Davis - Due to untimely circumstances (namely that he is a schmuck) "Charlie Hustle" was blackballed from the national past time - Ted Bundy was cordially offered a seat (on "old sparky" that is)

Please try to do a top 10 in order (hard as it may be) with an optional two or three "honorable mentions".

Great year for film. I forgot how many movies that really helped form my paradigm for what a film can be beyond a simple man with a gun came out this year. I'm really impressed and there is no way I can sort through the spots 2-10... Needless to say every film I listed from the #2 spot down could go into the #2 spot.

Jeremy's Top Seventeen List
1. Field of Dreams
2. Born on the Fourth of July
3. Roger & Me
4. The Abyss
5. Do the Right Thing
6. Dead Poets Society
7. Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade
8. Glory
9. My Left Foot
10. Drugstore Cowboy
11. Heathers
12. Say Anything...
13. When Harry Met Sally...
14. Lean on Me
15. Major League
16. Sex, Lies, and Videotape
17. Casualties of War

Jeremy's Reasons for Placing What Where
Disclaimer - #2 - #10 could all be interchanged in my opinion.
1. Field of Dreams - This is the only movie I have seen at least 100 times and have cried everytime. It is the best baseball & father son film ever.
2. Born on the Fourth of July - Tom Cruise's best performance shows the conservative and liberal sides of the Vietnam War from a Vet viewpoint
3. Roger & Me - This was the first documentary I ever saw that made me understand that a film could be ABOUT SOMETHING.
4. The Abyss - Who didn't get a chill when that water came out of the pool? Who didn't think it was cool to breath liquid? Who still doesn't enjoy this movie?
5. Do the Right Thing - This was the first indie film that really caught my attention. To this day I think it is beautiful and shows an urban experience.
6. Dead Poets Society - Carpe Diem! Oh Captain my Captain! Robin Williams is serious for the first time and he's great at it.
7. Indy - Junior and Pa... It's popcorn action and I don't think it ages great, but still a great film for a great franchise.
8. Glory - It told a story of the Civil War I didn't know. Matthew Broderick was more than Ferris Bueller and I met Denzel and Morgan
9. My Left Foot - Daniel Day Lewis is crazy, wont get out of the cart even after the day wraps, and he gives a performance that should be studied for 10 years to come
10. Drugstore Cowboy - I've been sober a long time, this is one of the few drug films that make me want to relapse, it is that realistic.
11. Heathers - This was my first real introduction to black commedy. It was everything The Breakfast Club wasn't and couldn't be
12. Say Anything... - I still love that 'In Your Eyes' song by Peter Gabriel, Cusack is amazing and this film introduced me to him.
13. When Harry Met Sally - The orgasm is always remembered, but as I get older and continue to sleep with my female friends, this movie becomes more true
14. Lean on Me - Morgan strikes back and does it really well. I love this guy, but why is it on my top list? 'Welcome to the Jungle' in the beginning
15. Major League - It's a baseball film and to this day I can't turn away when it's on
16. Sex, Lies, and Videotape - Dark, evil, and one of SS's few films that I worship for its independence and originality
17. Casualties of War - It's no Apocolypse Now. It's no Platoon. Hell, it's no MASH. It is a good war film that made Michael J Fox not a Keaton (family ties)

Oscars:
Who cares? Ben Affleck has an Oscar so how important and honest are these awards anyways?

Edit: In all honesty, I list the films that have an impact on me and that I enjoyed. I know it's top ten, but I'm special (not in an Olympics sort of way) so I expect to be treated differently. Look, for the 1990 I did 12. For the top 15 actors I listed 45. Sometimes I go above and beyond... Maybe I'm compensating for something, every think of that John? Huh?

Maybe it's because I'm just indecisive. Maybe it's because I'm a Jew... Do you have something against my people? Are you an anti-semite? That's what it is huh? 2000 years of oppression John, and you can't just give me the ability to list 17 freaking movies?

I make me laugh :)

Totally weirded out by the lack of GLORY love
What?!? It's on every list but briceman's. I've got it at #2... :)

I think the bigger question would be: Why are you and I the only ones with Dead Calm?

Yank...

The one thing I'd say on the matter is that making these lists (and most of all narrowing them down) is hard for all of us. IMO that's what makes them interesting...the fact that there was a little blood, sweat & tears put into them.

Although I like Glory, I don't think Broderick was right to take the charge in an epic-scale war film. He is a respectable enough actor in both straight and black comedy (and more recently in musical comedy)...but I have trouble buying him as a dramatic leading man (granted I did like War Games if that counts).

Also I thought Freeman's performance far outshined Denzel's (yet he got the Oscar...go figure.) Of course, I would have to say that both James Earl Jones and Burt Lancaster was both more worthy of the supporting actor award for Field of Dreams than either of the Glory co-stars.

I am a fiend for war films, but this one was more of an "in-field homerun".

Now please tell me why The Last Crusade is not gracing all of the lists at one spot or another?!

Wow.... well, my list was weird, cause a lot of the films I hadn't seen, and a lot I had seen but were junk! Little Mermaid, haha.

I was the father of a seven year-old girl, that year. I saw The Little Mermaid more times than I care to remember. But the greatest thing for me was watching my daughter sit in front of that movie doing all the dialogue and songs along with it.

Sometimes movies make our list for crazy reasons.

OMG Blaine, I totally didn't see that on your list or mean to offend at all! I saw that movie too, cause of my sister... but didn't like it... anyway... sorry man.
