CinePorter™ FAQ

Our goal for the initial US release is mid-summer, although I just heard that some of the parts may be delayed. Once we have firm commitments from all of our suppliers, we will announce an official date.

David,

The last time I had a relationship with "US release" it went sour. I have a HVX-200E, how long apart is the PAL release?

I understand,

I can't answer that question right now. I hope IBC time. We are working on setting up a distribution channel as well.

when is the cineporter hitting the streets? are yoiu guys in NAB? sell them straight from your website we 'll buy them. is it a parts or logistics or sourcing or engineering DELAY? or all?

We are not at NAB this year. I am actually traveling on CinePorter related business elsewhere and everyone else is working hard back home to get the CinePorter to market.

Everything is coming together nicely, but there are a number of "normal" problems that still need solved. Other than the initial units promised to our HVX clients and the direct Broadcast clients, we will likely only sell through dealers. This is one of the things that still needs ironed out. We are still shooting for a mid-summer release if everything stays the same.

I have a Firestore and am disappointed at best. The workflow is cumbersome, the Focus support is not good and willing though their customer advocate Lorenzo is awesome, and the Firestore manual must have been translated from Swahili into Russian into English. The whole reel naming thing is horrible and not having native recording is a disappointment. I look forward to the Cineporter, and my dealings with Spec-Comm have been fantastic and I would expect their tech support to follow the same trend. There are other Firestore issues I'll reserve for later but the Cineporter and the people behind it give me something to look forward to and I hope they send the competition a powerful message.

Dear David:

How is the progress going? I have a question I would like for you to answer:

Did you receive any support from Panasonic on your development? Did you do the whole research for the product? Are there any overheating issues right now?

I just spoke to a Panasonic representative in HK and they said that, engineering wyse, it would be very dificcult to accomplish what you where trying to do without any overheating and speed transfer issues... Thanks for clearing this up...

I'm really counting on your product... Keep us updated!

And before anyone says "nobody would buy P2 cards once there's a hard disk recorder", I have but one word to say: FireStore.

:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

That reminds me......I still need to call Focus Enhancements so I can send in my FS-4 recorder to get it fixed.......for the third time......

David,

I'd like to echo SPZ's question earlier on this page of the thread:

The only reservation I have from what I've read is on the temperature thing. Jan of Panasonic wrote a while back that Panasonic had struggled with trying to design an access card similar to what you're using, from what I gather, and had heat problems when in the P2 bay, and there was also a concern about leaving the P2 access door open in terms of dirt.

Have either of these concerns come up for your engineers, and how have they been resolved?

Thanks,

Unless I'm way off on design, the part of the CinePorter that fits in the P2 bay is merely a connector to the outboard drive unit. The mere form-factor connector to plug in the PCMCIA/CardBus slot is not going to generate significant heat...not even as much as a P2 card. I don't know any way they're going to get that connection to the CinePorter drive without leaving the P2 bay door open...but we'll see.

Open the P2 bay doors, Hal.

Hello Everyone,

I apologize for not responding sooner. I've been traveling on CinePorter™ business and just had a chance to sit down and think about this group buy idea.

First let me answer the "overheating" question. The ambient temperature in the P2 slot is pretty high, 110º F at standard room temperature. It goes up from there when the P2 card is inserted, since the card itself adds heat. Our interface card contains an ASIC that runs absolutely cold to the touch and a BLVDS serializer that runs completely cold as well. We do not pull any power from the camera and actually run cooler than with a P2 card.

At this time there is no way to close the door. We will provide a blank card that can be inserted into the second slot if you are concerned about the environment and don't want to use battery power to run a P2 card in the second slot. The final enclosure design is finally finished and so is the interface card connection, so look for actual pictures sometime at the end of next week. The web guys are "getting to it."

Now, as far as the group buy. We obviously appreciate the support and the enthusiasm of everyone here and want to do whatever we can to please and thank all of you. The purpose of the CinePorter™ was to make P2 a more viable option and to help us sell more of it. So we offered a discount and shipping priority on the CinePorter™ to those who purchased the cameras from us, thus supporting our efforts. We realize that some, especially from outside of US could not do so. I hope you can see our dilemma. How would you suggest we go about putting together a group buy and what advantage do you expect? We want to please the DVXusers, but not take away from those that perhaps made a sacrifice and waited for their camera from us.

Maybe we can come up with a win-win?

Best regards,

I would suggest a form-fitting rubber grommet on the end of the CinePorter card attachment, that fits to and seals the opening. I think that would give everyone peace of mind about the environment/dust concerns.

Thanks for the suggestion Barry. That's one option we've looked at and it may very well be the solution in the end. We wanted it to be universal between cameras as well as allow you to insert a card into the second slot. It turns out to be a bit tricky to do it right.

I believe rubber would insulate the heat more than the plastic cap on the HVX. Just something to think about. And to note Spec-Comm, this solution can be universal if the rubber cap was removable. Simply remove the cap off the cable, and replace it with the appropriate rubber cap to fit whatever camera you are using.

Will this CinePort fitting on the bottom of the camera get in the way of something like a Movie Tube or rails of some kind?

We have not tested with Movie Tube yet, But I believe the Movie Tube would require us to mount elsewhere. We are testing with various rail systems. We do have an extension cable that would allow you to mount the CinePorter™ elsewhere.
