Simple question about sound w/ DVX100

Hi,
I just don t know what the problem was..... but yesterday i recorded a flamenco concert on the theater, the image was beautifull and perfect, but the sound was so
bad.....and i m getting crazy because i don t know what was my mistake !!

The sound was recorded at 48k (16bit) with the on camera mic, set to CH1 (INT L) and CH2 (IntR) and the recording speed was SP, but when i capture and reproduce with Final Cut Pro is too low !!! and the capture setting in FCP are OK so i guess i recorded the sound too low during the concert??? is strange because i was cheking during the concert and the sound levels bars in the camera display look fine and in some cases reach the red mark.

So i can t understand what the problem is !!
Is someone can give me some advice i will apreciate it a lot !!

Also i was checking the menu setting on the camera and i think there is no way to set the sound level in automatic am i wrong???

Thanks a lot for your help

Maybe your sound levels were too low. Do you find that the sound is too low throughout the entire recording? Because in fact you DO want your sound levels to go a couple of blocks over the red mark. That's good sound--in the red. If you were only a few blocks into the white, without reaching the red, your sound was possibly too low.

Otherwise, your camera's audio setting might be set to a default level that's too low. But others in DVXuser besides me will know a lot more about that.

yep, maybe there were too low then !!
Are you sure that a couple of blocks over the red mark mean good sound ?????
I thought that was saturated sound but now i m not sure !!
Thanks for your help....

There is the historical confusion about the level markings. In the old analog system 0 or zero was not the highest possible level, as the tape could be oversaturated 6-8 dB without too much harm. Thus the VU meters are marked red above zero level. Getting an occacional red was perfectly OK, even good.

With digital recording you must never go over zero. Thus it would be logical to have over zero as red like in the old days, but then this "over" portion would be useless as you are not supposed to reach that part (and on a digital signal those levels do not exist, everything is cut off at zero). But red is a color we like on our meters, so on DVX100 the first red is at -12 dB and the last one at zero. Thus you should have 1-4 reds light up to get a strong signal.

And remember to use the ALC (limiter) to add safety in getting strong signals.

Thanks a lot guys !!!!
Then i guess my problem was i recorded the sonud too low !!!! that s it !!
So the ALC (limiter) should be ON right???

An other question, is there any way to set the volume recording in automatic???

...and a nice set of headphones.

Oh Yes! so true, I'ved lived in learned.. Headphones so important, but I guess in a concert they'd be useless, probably can't hear anything anyway, but anything else, hand phones are so underated when it comes to the indie production
