Top 10 Films of 1991...

1991...

We lost number three on The Callaghan Top Ten Directors Of All Time List, as Frank Capra's "American dream" of a life comes to a close - Terminator 2: Judgment Day becomes the most expensive film ever made, ringing in the era of the $100,000,000+ behemoth - There is bad news and worse news for the Buffalo Bills...The Bad News: they lose the Super Bowl, The Worse News: they will go on to do so three more consecutive times

Please try to do a top 10 in order (hard as it may be) with an optional two or three "honorable mentions".

The Callaghan Best Films of 1991 List:

08 The Addams Family
09 JFK

* i agree on****

hood sucked, bugsey sucked, adams family?rocketeer?.....LAMB, FISHER KING,BACKDRAFT, CAPE FEAR

Kimko-

I knew that I'd take some flak for Hook (I am in the vast minority apparantly)...

but
as I've said, for me Spielberg is the only cat batting 1000 in his filmmaking career, and this Robin Williams-Dustin Hoffman-Bob Hoskins-Maggie Smith-powered epic is no exception in my book. Granted, Julia Roberts wouldn't have been my pick...but she didn't tarnish the overall film for me.

however
The Addams Family & The Rocketeer?!
Come on, my man...pure entertainment, the both of 'em.

& By The Way, my friend...
it's time for you to pony up a list or ten of your own :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

1991 was a mishmash for me.

Callaghan, I understand why you included Hook but it just fell a little flat for me. Though I will admit that I've grown to like it more with the passage of time.

I felt compelled to put the John Irvin version of Robin Hood in here even though it was released on TV. It was only because of that POS by Kevin Costner that pushed the better version to a television release...not enough star power behind it. Thank God that didn't happen with Wyatt Earp/Tombstone. For me, this was the best version of the Robin Hood legend, period.

you mean you didn't like Robin Hood Men In Tights? ;)

i thought you'd appreciate that... men in tights was just horrible.. i like MAYBE 2 parts in that movie and even those were done really bad...

I just don't find Richard Lewis the slightest bit funny. I can't believe I just used his name in the same sentence with the word "funny".

Chad, i do agree with you on Hook. i just didn't like the other picks, now Blaine came up with Under Suspicion which i thought was good. now Cygnet74 came up with some foriegn films that i'll have to see. and Deano came up with some that i too had fun watching.

Richard Lewis must be sucking someone off in a big way to be where he is at. The guy is not even remotely funny nor talented.

Again...(sotto) Very Nice, Hudson, on your picks.

I almost went with Kamen's score as well, but figured Menken & Disney deserved at least one statue basically as a representation of the four or five amazing years in a row of unbelievable animated films (not to mention a long-overdue "comeback" that arguably saved theatrically-released, big-budget animation)

What injustice!!!

Prince of Thieves getting nods and no respect for Men in Tights?
If any movie ever deserved a wickedly savage spoof it's this one. Kostner as Robin Hood. Yikes.
(I know they weren't made in the same year, but they were both mentioned in the thread)

God help us...

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves is a killer pop-corn flick.
If you haven't seen the version with Patrick Bergin, do yourself a favor and search it out. You won't be sorry. btw, Uma Thurman plays Maid Marian. Also starring:
Jurgen Prochnow...Sir Miles Folcanet
Jeroen Krabbe...Baron Roger Daguerre
David Morrissey...Little John
Owen Teale...Will Scarlett
Jeff Nuttall...Friar Tuck

I've said before, I did really dig the Bergin version...
Just never personally thought it compares to Prince of Thieves.

Also Costner (who people seem to either really like or really despise) was treated unfairly. One of the naysayers' biggest nitpicks? That he didn't speak with a Brit accent. To that criticism I must scratch my head.

I thought it was all around a throwback picture, and that Costner's Robin of Locksley was a throwback performance. In fact, I always compared it to Clark Gable's performance as Fletcher Christian in Mutiny on the Bounty. Clark Gable didn't feel it necessary to act with an unnatural dialect. His universal leading man charm carried his performance along without it...and besides, very few simulated accents have been spot-on anyway & many were quite bad (and therefore distracting.)

Bottom line, though...Gable was right for the role of Fletcher Christian, as was Costner for Robin Hood IMHO.

Of course, Blaine, it's a moot point as to whose version is better, Bergin's or Costner - 'cause neither of them can ever top...

In my book.
