Oh... my god.

When I was in college, I loaded freight for a cargo airliner one summer. I had to take a drug test, and although I was known to occasionally partake of Dave Chapelle's favorite herb during my college years, it had been a few months and everything came up clean. What was funny is that the people who worked there full time smoked up way more than any of us summer kids from the colleges did. They were always sparking up at the end of the shift. I guess they got clean for a few months to pass the drug test then went right back to smoking once they got the job.

As for your dilemma, I agree with Hudson. Walk in there and explain everything to the manager. Make him tell you to your face that he won't hire you even though it's Target's fault.

Cheers,

Josh

the fact that if it can be determined that you are a user in your private life, there is a fairly good chance that sooner or later you will come to work under the influence.

Why? I don't sit around naked at work, but I do at home.

Lots of people drink, but don't come to work that way. (Yeah, some do. And? Deal with them case-by-case. No pun intended. :) )

What blanches my almonds is the nonsense that they're worried about productivity. I've yet to see/be at a job where the majority of the time wasn't spent in goofing off, anyway. There are very few categories of go go go jobs, and those are either mindless Do You Want Fries With That? jobs, or fast burnout jobs (where drugs probably come in handy).

Sure you do, you're naked under your clothes. Just like some poeple will come to work buzzed and hide it with eye drops and mouthwash. same difference.

Some people might be able to drink or do drugs and not have it effect their performance at work. But that minority is not Targets concern so they eliminate the whole group. It's easier. What do you expect?

Honstly? I expect that if I do my job well my employer should stay the hell out of my personal business. If I screw up, for whatever reason, then fire me.

Eliminating a whole group for the actions of some of that group is a VERY slippery slope.

I'm not an idiot, and I'm not wet behind the ears. We've all seen drugs ruin people. However, I also know several drug users that are very dependable, professional and consistent with their high quality of work. It's individual. People should be judged as individuals EVERY TIME and not based on the actions of what groups they belong to.

plain and simple.

I can see both sides of the issue. Look at me, for instance. I drink a lot (news flash). Do you know how much work I've missed because of it? Zero. Of course, not everyone knows when to put the bottle down. I do.

Rook - When I said, "What do you expect?" I meant, "What do you expect from corporations?" They don't think like we do. Dealing with things case-by-case works for me but some see that as too much trouble. They'd rather just check DNA and get rid of all the possible bad genes. You're right, it is dangerous and it's not right but, once again, what do we expect when greed and money rule the world. We need to stop being "good little consumers" and "good little worker bees" and start living and working for ourselves. Only then will there be balance in the universe again.

:)

PK,

I know you're fighting the good fight. I was just enjoying the debate.

And you're right, I expect only the worst from corporations. They are evil. They are rewarded for behaviour that is (often) criminal.

I also, agree with your sentiment that we need to stop being nice little consumers.

However, I push it a little further. I advocate researching some of the big corporations (walmart, Nike, etc...) and treating all dealings with them like it's war.

They abuse us any chance they get. I feel nothing when I abuse them back.

When I was in college, I was a night security guard in one of the dorms. You could imagine how many hot girls I met while working there for 4 years.:)

darn i feel bad. i used to be sercurity from 10pm-6am at a retirement apartments complex in FL. i would sit in my car and check peoples stickers and let them by. my brother would come over and we would drink and smoke and then i would make my rounds, i then opened the rec hall and we would shoot pool and play ping pong all morning. then i'd get ready for my construction job on the same site at 8am, i was 18. no drug test back in the 70s.

I guess we all have somethng in common, other than filmmaking, we've all been security guards. Well, I was more like an insecurity guard. "What are you looking at? It's my uniform isn't it? It makes me look fat, right? I hate it!"

I worked the graveyard shift watching a shopping strip that had a 24 hour Eckerd Drugs. Good times, just reading magazines, and cruisng around listening to the radio. Any college students who want to have an easy job and have plenty of freetime to study should look into the security guard industry. :)
