I applied for a job.. at target.. got an interview... when for a drug test the VERY NEXT DAY at 6:30 to avoid any mix ups. (you have to get your drug test 24 hours after your interview. or you're not accepted for the job)... Target called and told me that "You took your drug test 5 days after the proposed date."

....

*sighs*

I also quit my other job, because I was sure I'd of gotten this one because I was being drug tested.

now I'm jobless....

Did you have to sign in at the drug testing facility? If so, maybe they still have that information and maybe they can straighten it out for you. It's worth a shot.

I just called, they said my employer has to deal with it. I should be on record though... It's all in the computer. but, honestly... is Target going to care? no, why would they straigten something out that's not their fault!

Once again a glitch in the "system" keeps someone down. I'm sorry to hear this and I hope it works out. Maybe this will turn out to be a good thing and you'll find a better job.

I hate when life hands these to us. Very frustrating to be told that--essentially accused of doing something you didn't.

As PK said, I hope this works out better in the long run for you--in fact, I'm sure it will. It's hard to keep a directing legend down.

It was targets fault... They mixed up the interview dates. lol! I feel like I've complained for nothing!

Man that sucks. Target sucks. When I turned 18, I applied for a Target Visa card, and they turned me down because I had no credit. That happened to me like 10 times. How the hell are you supposed to build credit w/o a credit card!?

Well, my credit is fine now, and I'm sure you'll find another job. All will be good without Target's help.

Want some advice? Be a security guard. Seriously, it's such a stupid, demeaning, boring, etc. job. But you make TONS of money (in respect to other jobs in that league) there's plenty of time to get homework done (depends on where your stationed) and you pretty much get to pick your schedule.

Good luck.

I was a security guard in college--it's true, fair money, and lots of time to study.

I was night guard in a zoo for a while, and was teasing the bobcats thinking they couldn't reach me. It turns out they could.

Nice!

At one point I was a guard at a chemical facility. I had to walk around at night, and wasn't allowed to turn on lights because it might disturb lab rats, etc. I had to write down temperatures and psi readings and stuff. It was actually really creepy.

Go into the store and ask to speak to the manager. Dress nice, comb your hair ....

Ask him about this mix-up and explain that you are very motivated for the position.

Be a man !

When I was in college, I was a night security guard in one of the dorms. You could imagine how many hot girls I met while working there for 4 years.:)

RAGE!!!!

Now that you mention it... there was this guy walking around with an XL1 and a $100,000 hunk of glass jimmied to the front of it.

They make you get a drug test?!?

What drugs are they looking for?

Man, talk about crazy conservatism infringing on your privacy.

Screw target! I'll never ever ever go there again.

I'm NOT trying to defend Target. They made a mistake and I'm sure it won't be the last time they screw up. But as far as drug testing and privacy, I'm just going to play devil's advocate.

I had a computer business in Thailand and one of the employees we had always came late and would sometimes not come at all. His work performance was pretty much non-existent. His actions outside the office (drinking a lot) hurt business and the other employees resented him getting paid the same as them when they had to work twice as hard. He made his actions outside the office my business because it hurt my business. Same as, if you don't shower it's really none of my business because its outside the office. BUT, if you not showering effects business then it IS my business. :)

I never gave drug tests to my employees and never would in the future. I trust they'll come to work on time and do their job. If they don't then they'll be let go. But I can understand why some give drug tests. Employees actions outside the office do hurt business and productivity and its a huge concern, especially when you have 10,000 employees. The time and money it costs to train a new employee is expensive and there's a learning curve. Business es want employees to stay a long time and be productive cogs in the machine. If an employee gets a job, slacks off, and then gets let go, a new employee must be hired and trained and this hurts productivity. So I understand why some businesses want to take every precaution available to screen their employees and I honestly don't have a problem with it. My insurance company asks if I'm a smoker or a heavy drinker because it's a risk to their business. Target wants to know if you do drugs because it's a risk to their business. Some people might be able to drink or do drugs and not have it effect their performance at work. But that minority is not Targets concern so they eliminate the whole group. It's easier. What do you expect?

Not every business checks for drugs. But those who have been effected by it in the past feel it is worth the extra step. So we can gripe about our rights and our privacy being invaded, but the business must also think about their own rights. And a business has the right to do what it must do (background checks, verify references, and whatever) to make sure its as productive as possible. $$$$. I'm not saying its right BUT if you are going to live and work for others (the man) then you gotta play by their rules. The only solution is to be your own boss and live by your own rules. ...or live in a van down by the river.

Here's a very interesting study about how moderate drinkers effect the work place and cause over $148 billion in lost wages and loss productivity each year.

Businesses Pay in Decreased Productivity

They don't check for alcohol use now. But don't be surprised if they do it in the future. (Note: if they had a way of checking for excessive use of DVXuser I'd fail and never get a job.) Money makes the world go round. If something hurts productivity then they'll nip it in the bud. This issue isn't about crazy conservatism. It's about the bottomline. Some issues, yes. But this one, no. :)

Do What? I don't think "conservatism" has anything to do with it. I think it is more about companies trying to protect themselves from the actions of employees who have the potential to do harm to the company. Now days you will take a drug test for just about any job other than low end fast food. Hell I even had to take a drug test so I could listen to people ***** about their computers.

Which is all irrelevent to excessive substance use. Poor performance = get fired.

The assumption that a drug user/drinker/whatever will be bad for business is dangerous, no matter how often it actually happens.

Firing/denying employment because of maybes is not a good thing.

Bosses just need to grow a pair and fire people who need firing, not depend on blanket policies. "Sorry, Joe. Nothing I can do about it. The policy is you can't do that and work here." is a cowardly way of actually doing anything yourself.

One thing I have not seen mentioned here as far as the drug testing is the fact that if it can be determined that you are a user in your private life, there is a fairly good chance that sooner or later you will come to work under the influence. Impaired function means a higher risk of harm, either to yourself on company time or to business assets. Employers have to carry insurance on their employees in the event of injuries, etc. (Worker's Comp and other liability insurance depending on the industry). Many times, its these insurers who dictate the requirement of a drug screening so that the company may hire the candidates who pose the least amount of potential threat of a financial loss to the insurance company.

I dont think the drug testing is designed to weed out (pun intended) slackers. I think its a business decision on many levels to avoid bigger financial losses down the road.

I agree. The employee I had was let go because of job performance not on "maybes". I'm sure other employees were doing far more partying then him, but they didn't allow it to effect their job. I just used my experience as an example because it shows how after-hours can effect office-hours. A lot of people think, "Hey, what I do outside the office is none of your business." When, in fact, it is their business IF it effects productivity.

You're right, corporations are cowards and they do hide behind policies. They only think about the bottomline. Greed knows no right and wrong. I understand why they do what they do, but it doesn't mean I like it.
