I assume, from everyone's list, this is all men? We'll do woman on another list? Eeks, this list is impossible. I am going with the actors I find most interesting. This will doubtless change...

In no particular order...

Hackman - quite possibly the greatest film actor of all time, challenged by:

Spencer Tracy - A master of sublety long before it was in vogue.

Cary Grant - probably the greatest movie star of all time. A good actor too, but as stars go, he is the top of the top.

Jim Broadbent - Never bad, always fascinating. Like many English actors, you can give him the smallest part, and he will likely steal the movie from everyone else.

Brendan Gleeson - One of my favorites right now. Just always there, always solid, always adds to the film.

Sydney Greenstreet - How can you not love him?

Bogart - Invented cool. So, you know...

Young Pacino - coud have been a truely great actor until he decided to start yelling every roll. Dunno where the hell that came from. But now, he's little more than a joke.

David Strathairn - If you've never seen him on stage, he will blow you away TWICE as much as on film. A friend of mine acts with him at the Epic Theatre in NYC. Look out for them, and go see a reading or show when he's in it.

Robert Mitchum - A real-live badass. If you don't know anything about his life, get a bio. The man played bad so well, because he was bad.

Cheat #11 - Kurt Russell. Come on, how could he not be on this list?

I'm doing 2 lists. Top 10 of ALL TIME and Top 10 working...

Of All Time

01 Humphrey Bogart

02 Jimmy Stewart

03 Marlon Brando

04 Cary Grant

05 James Cagney

06 John “Duke” Wayne

07 Gene Kelly

08 Burt Lancaster

09 Clint Eastwood

10 Tom Hanks

Favorite WORKING ACTORS

01 Tom Hanks

07 Al Pacino (ya there have been some bombs lately but the guy's got talent)

08 Ewan McGregor

09 Jude Law

10 Steve Carrel (say what you will, the man is hilarious)

These are my favorite actors. I will watch any movie they're in. There are many other fine actors, but I won't necessarily watch a movie just because they're in it as other factors come into the picture.

01 Harrison Ford
02 Sean Connery
03 Gene Hackman
04 Paul Newman
05 Humphrey Bogart
06 Clint Eastwood
07 Mel Gibson
08 Morgan Freeman
09 Samuel L. Jackson
10 Kevin Spacey
11 Tom Hanks
12 Michael Caine
13 Robert DeNiro
14 Steve McQueen
15 Al Pacino

Very difficult to narrow this down to 15. Several actors that just missed the cut:

Bruce Willis
Christopher Walken
Robert Mitchum
Jack Nicholson
Cary Grant
Tommy Lee Jones
Liam Neeson

(bring on the babes :love4:)

Okay. I need to quantify my #1 pick. While I think his acting chops might not be on par with the other 9 on my list, I do believe that as an actor, for me, none have more charisma. He is my absolutely favorite star. Some may want to quantify him as only a star and not an actor. And though I know they are not the same thing, his body of work as an actor and his draw for me as a star puts him at the very top of my list.

1) Clint Eastwood
2) Tom Hanks
3) Johnny Depp
4) Marlon Brando
5) Robin Williams
6) Jimmy Stewart
7) Humphrey Bogart
8) Anthony Hopkins
9) Gene Hackman
10) Russell Crowe
11) Liam Neeson
12) Leonardo Dicaprio
13) Jack Nicholson
14) Gary Oldman
15) Daniel Day Lewis

THIS WAS ONE FRIGGIN' TOUGH LIST TO MAKE. ASK ME AGAIN TOMORROW AND THIS LIST MIGHT BE ENTIRELY SHIFTED AROUND AND SOME NEW NAMES ADDED AND SOME REMOVED. To some of my favorite actors that didn't make the cut, today, my apologies.

Rick
PS Tomorrow, Clint will still be numero uno.

Last May, this exact week actually, I worked on a video project with him. One actor. Him. Small crew. Cinematographer, and me (both with our DVX's in hand). AD, DIRECTOR, A couple of others. In that intimate setting for several days, I got a pretty good chance to talk to him. And since I act, I really wanted to pick his brain a little. I can tell you that he is a very nice guy. Not an ounce of ego. Hes just a regular guy with a cool life. I really appreciated that about him. I hope our paths cross againg someday.

Next time you are in a situation like that with him and you don't call me, I will hunt you down and kill you.

I'm going to say it again: HE SHOULD PLAY KIRK!!!!!!!!

Oh yeah, he's an all right actor, but he has the potential to become a truely great movie star.

i guess that is the beautiful thing about opinions....ya know, them being completely subjective and all...i liked Gladiator, but Crowe's performance wasn't as good as Phoenix'....IMHO of course...

i think Crowe tries to fall back on the "strong, sullen, silent type" image too much in roles...it doesn't do anything for me and i have trouble finding him authentic....

Once again, my inability to participate in a quantitive poll will present itself as I will bend the rules to accomodate my personal interest.

I decline to put these in order of acting ability or personal interest, but none the less, I present my list of actors who I respect and those I will see a film because they are associated with the project:

01. Christopher Walken
02. Edward Norton
03. Clint Eastwood
04. Warren Beaty
05. Robert Redford
06. Tom Hanks
07. Steve McQueen
08. Elvis Pressley
09. Bruce Campbell
10. Brad Pitt
11. George Clooney
12. Albert Brooks
13. Sig Haig
14. Mel Gibson
15. Humpfrey Bogart
16. Marlon Brando
17. Al Pacino
18. Robert DeNiro
19. Dustin Hoffman
20. Michael Douglas
21. Jack Lemmon
22. Jack Nicholson
23. Daniel Day-Lewis
24. Gary Oldman
25. Joe Pesci
26. Christian Bale (American Psycho)
27. Orson Welles
28. Phillip Seymour Hoffman
29. John Cusak
30. Christian Slater
31. John Wayne
32. Ed Harris
33. Sean Connery
34. Morgan Freeman
35. Kevin Spacey
36. Tim Robbins
37. Denzel Washinton
38. William H. Macy
39. John C. Reiley
40. Johnny Depp
41. Jimmy Stewart
42. James Dean
43. Anthony Hopkins
44. Cary Grant
45. Slyvester Stallone
46. Burt Lancaster
47. Ian McKellan
48. Lawrence Fishburn
49. Martin Sheen
50. Robert Duval

Why did I list these men? Because I feel compelled to see their work. There are a lot more people I could list, but in my opinion these are the names that impress me and make me want to see their films. Did I do 5x the work? Yeah. Did I define who is the best? Nope. Will I? Nope.

Aww man how could I have forgotten walken and connery

And now, the infamous follow up list. People who have either turned me off to their work or people who I do not respect.

01. Keannu Reeves
02. Ben Affleck
03. Matt Damon
04. Matt Dillon
05. Matthew McConnehey
06. Jim Carrey
07. Tom Cruise
08. Russell Crowe
09. Paul Walker
10. Vin Diesel
11. Peter Gallagher
12. Robin Williams
13. Billy Crystal
14. Ellijah Wood
15. Sean Austin
16. Tobey Maguire
17. Adrian Brodey
18. Bruce Willis
19. Martin Short
20. Emilio Estevez
21. Charlie Sheen
22. Alec Baldwin
23. Billy Baldwin
24. Kevin Smith
25. Adam Sandler

Now, I am not saying that these people are not talented, gifted, or that they are not legends (in some people's minds). To me, they do not inspire me and I take nothing away from their performance, or they have become so deeply associated with certain roles that I am, personally, unable to disconnect from my preconceived notions associated with them.
