what nationality are you?

Technically I'm American. . . Honestly I gotta' join the guys who don't see themselves as any nationality though... I don't make it a point to go to Oktoberfest or drink/eat German food... I'm not particularly fond of polka and leiderhosen. I'm always amazed at how people look at each other in nationalities, instead of just some other guy who's also trying to make it the best he can.

I tend to think of Americans as Americans too. Consider me a boorish American.

That will only happen when we get invaded and almost put out by some wicked aliens from mars or when the monkeys or camels take over the world and enslave us humans.

In terms of who's on whose team, yes we are all Americans and in that sense "the same".

They say in time there will be only one race in the U.S. - a mix of everything - and while I'm all for interracial love (in a big way) - becoming more generic and less diverse seems like a loss, not gain.

People like Matt and my self and others who don't feel like we have any heritage, save the tract home we were raised in, my be more sensitive to that melding as we (correct me if I'm wrong on your behalf Matt) wish we had some tangible roots and that St. Patricks day, or Kwanza, or Octoberfest, meant something more to us than Halloween or April Fool's day or Homecoming.

Certainly hope so.

Otherwise, what would be the point of leaving your house if everyone outside was the same?

BORing.

Hudson...

"Black Irish" is really an American exclusive term. There are many myths surrounding it's origin, but the truth of the matter is that it originally refereed to "Black '47 Irish". This was of course in reference to the largest wave of Irish immigration following the low point of the potato famine in 1847.

The stories of shipwrecked crew members from the wrecked Spanish Armada "mixing" their Iberian blood with the Irish is largely the stuff of myth.

However, in Ireland descriptions & references have been made for centuries in regard to hair color. For instance, Finn-gall (literally "fair foreigner") was a reference to the Viking invaders of Éire, and the light hair they introduced into the gene pool...
...while Dubh-gall (literally "dark foreigner") was a reference to the Norman (and some Danish) invaders who brought with them dark (or black) hair. For this reason, I have always thought that perhaps, in some cases, "Black Irish" could have been an Anglicized version among immigrants of Dubh-gall...refering to their black hair.

Anyways, I hope that helps.

Edit:

Oh, and personally I'm a mick...but a proud American first and foremost.

I had heard that theory about India thousands of years ago. I dunno. Sounds pretty unlikely to me.

We'll get some "creole", though.

huh? My bubble doesn't feel busted ... I think I'm using it in the last context "black haired and Irish" and I think I like saying that I look like a fat and bald Collin Farrll ... cuz that's kind of like saying my Mustek 5000
is like a DVX except that it's single chip, has a digital zoom ... etc.

But I don't have any true sense of what "black Irish" means other than dark haired /eyed Irish , and no sense of any nationailty in terms of a connection with a heritage.

We never went to any sort of ethnic parades, or talked about any proud Irish roots or anything.

Just ... "I think we are mostly X,Y, and Z and your Dad is this, that, and the other thing"

... so I'd have to have a bubble for you to burst it, amigo :)

Nothin meant !
