can you print to tape in 24p?

Hello:

I made a new 24p project then rendered the whole thing as 24p 2-3 pulldown. Now when i try to print to tape and choose 24p 2-3 pulldown as the template, it will not let me begin recording. For some reason when the screen that allows you to choose 'collision recording' or 'manual recording' all the options are inselectable and it won't let me proceed (you cant select the finish bottom). However when i choose ntsc everything works fine but it records it at 29.970 fps? Would there be any other way to print to tape in 24p?

Any suggestions?

If you rendered in 24p then would your material not be 24p? So then what would be the difference when you print to tape? The machine can't rerender the material when it prints. Why don't you print a small portion and see how it comes out. I don't believe I have encountered a similar situation.

Once you render out to 24p with 23 pulldown, the video IS NOW 60i !!!!!

So, at that point, print it to tape just like any other 60i material.

Okay, thanks for the reply's. I was just a little worried when the print to tape option would only let me use it at the 29.97 settings.

Thank you.

Try Printing to tape from the capture dialog -- you cannot print to tape using the timeline, but you can print to tape from files you've rendered to your hard disk already.

Huh? Why can't you print to tape using the timeline? I do it all the time.

You are printing to tape from the timeline at 24p?

I have not been able to do that myself - just from the capture dialog.

When you use the print to tape option, it brings up a render dialog box, and you choose 24p with 2:3 pulldown -- OR, if you're planning to edit in 24p later using the tape, you use 2:3:3:2 pulldown.

Don't know if this is what's happening to some people, but:

I noticed that if I'm printing to tape with uncompressed video in the timeline, print to tape does not work (using a pulldown template). If I edit the print to tape template to be uncompressed, then it will function again.

Ok, I think I'm having this same problem. The last page of the Print-to-tpae dialogue is all greyed out when I try to use the 24p (normal) template. I do have some uncompressed QT files on the timeline from AE. But, does it really work if you change the template to uncompressed? When I do that, it reverts to the NTSC 60i template. I even tried saving a new template - it doesn't show up. I haven't tested it through yet. Can you say if this happened to you, but it indeed worked? Thanks!

FWIW - I haven't been able to get print to tape to work from the timeline in Vegas 5 for my DVX files. It goes through all the steps (prerendering, etc.) but then invariably drops out within the first few seconds/minutes and then consistently drops out throughout the printing process. For my 24p DVX files, I have to render to an .avi file inserting appropriate (N or A) pulldown, then go the capture program and print the rendered file to tape. But I lose the ability to insert color bars, etc. that way. Why is that?

I saw a thread on Dvinfo.net (oops!) where David Jimerson said that Vegas 6 (what I have) has a bug where - you can NOT print to tape utilizing a 24p output to DV tape (utilizing 2:3 pulldown insertion). It's a freakin bug....I can't believe it hasn't been patched ot there isn't more griping about it. Just upgrade to 7? Uh, that costs money. I just bought 6!

Well, the workaround seems to be render the 24p timeline as an AVI. Drop that in a new 29.97 timeline and print to tape using the normal DV template. Apparently when it renders, it will straighten it all out. Just tried a test and it seems to work, but not 100% sure yet if it's all kosher. Sux cuz I need to get a tape to a dub house to go to Beta for a film festival, so I NEED to be able to print to tape with 24p. :(

There's a bug which is intermittent, and it doesn't act the same way as being described in the thread here. When it happens, it's not a matter of printing in 24p; nothing will print, and you can't get very far in the dialog box before the print.

This bug never appeared in Vegas 5, and I haven't seen anyone complain about it in 6 for a while.
