changing edit format from 24 fps to 30 fps in FCP

Hello,

I'm editing in FCP with 24p advanced footage set up for DV-NTSC 24p (23.98)in Easy Set Up, but I'd like to add 30fps footage into the edit. When I do, the 30fps clips don't look or move accurately. Does anyone know if (how) it's possible to mix formats between the 2 types of footage in one edit? In the meantime, this has stopped my work groove.

this would be so appreciated,

To mix footage the best is to shoot 24p and leave it at 29.97 in the edit. They your other normal footage will cut in.
At thsi stage you coudl add pulldown to the 24 footage and edit in 29.97 with the other footage or you'll need to get natress or other filter to do a real conversion from one fps to another.

Thanks for your reply,

I'm still a little unclear. The 24p adv footage was captured in DV-NTSC 24p Advanced Pulldown Removal already. I was told that it's best to edit 24p adv footage in DV-NTSC 24p mode, but when I added the regular 30fps footage into the timeline, that footage became distorted. Which setting should I use for the edit in Easy Set up to facilitate both? If I edit in 29.97 (which specific setting? regular DV-NTSC?) what would happen to the 24 fps scenes?
Meanwhile, I'm stuck in the edit.

any further lifelines heavilly appreciated,

First choice would be to avoid mixing clisp with different fps.

If you did need to mix footage and had not shot it yet, would be to shoot 24p (not 24pa) and capture 29.97. Now everything will cut in 29.97 edit.

At thsi stage you have pure 24p footage. To mix with 29.97 footage succesfully you either need to change the 24p to 29.97 by adding pulldown (note this is the way films are transferred to tape and the way your DVX100 records 24p mode). Adding pulldown may require another program (After Effects, etc) (FCP 4.5 couldn't add pulldown, not sure about FCP 5 package) Once this is done you edit both in 29.97 sequence.

Your other option is to get a program or plugin to really convert fps. Nattress makes some plugins that do this.

Thanks again Scottdvx100 for your reply,

I filmed in 24p adv because I was informed that it's better to edit with. Is this true? Otherwise it seems much easier to shoot in straight 24p mode just in case.
I have FCP 5.0.4...also not sure if it can do the pulldown you mentioned.

much appreciated feedback,

If you're shooting a 24fps mode then 24 (23.98) edit is certainly clean and allows you to go easier to film, 24fps dvd or to the web. Unfortuantely you're mixing film speeds so the typical process doesn't apply.
Search help menu in fcp for adding pulldown or telecine.

Thank you,

I'll have to see what the fcp5 manual says on this issue. Earlier, I posted this problem on the Technical forum (before reading that double posting's not a good thing), didn't get results for a little while, then posted here. Ironically, yesterday there was a response there, and he mentioned to try Cinema Tools to convert footage. I haven't tried that yet (or ever used Cinema Tools), but it sounds interesting.

ps. now that I know the policy, I won't be double posting again.

thanks for all your time and help on this issue,

For the Cinema Tools conversion its really easy.....

Open Cinema Tools
The click File>New Batch Conform.
Choose the 30fps clips you want to make 24fps.
Then conform.
A new folder should appear on your desktop with the footage, now conformed to 24p.

Just a note that conform just sets the fps rate for each frame. It doesn't visibly adjust the frames for the new playback speed. If you want to have the frames look correct and play at thhe correct rate you'll need to do something else.
