I want something that will be compadable with my Avid Xpress DV now and still work with Avid HD once I can afford it. All this is for creating DVD's with HVX footage both SD and HD eventually. I'm not looking for HD DVD-R at this point. As for Authoring Software, I'll take something basic that is bundled with the drive, the Avid HD I want has authoring software.

So far I'm liking these sony's

Internal, Fast, Lacks Headphone jack and audio controls. (is this neccesary if I'm mastering all audio on a computer.

External, Can record SD live from a camcorder, Has features that I don't nead if I plan to edit on a comupter and then write to DVD.

Anybody running a similar setup that can recommend one of these sony's or another brand?

The first thing to do is go to Avid's website and look for the compatible DVD writers, then decide which one.

I've always loved the Pioneer line. I have burned several DVD-R's to be sent in for glass mastering using my Pioneer A06 and the results have been error-free.

You should try the NEC lines of drives, cheap, fast, reliable, quickly shipped. This is a solid drive that I have loaded into three PCs and have had zero problems.

When I order from newegg, I'll recieve within 3 business days of order.

If you HAVE to get the pioneer because you feel the NEC drive is TOO CHEAP (oh my god, an optical drive could never be cheap!) You could go with the pioneer for two dollars more.

Both are 16x DL +-RW drives.

These should work on Macs too, since they use parallell IDE for their optical drives (but I could be wrong so dont take my word for it)

I would steer clear of Sony. Their warranty only covers 90 days, then after that they tell you to go buy a new one. I have owned two sony DVD RW drives, and they both failed within 14 months.

I would steer clear of anything sony, just because of their reputation for not honoring any warranty repair of any kind.

Thanks for the suggestions, the Pioneer looks pretty nice as well, what I was hoping for was something in the 300-400 range, just to make sure it will last when I buy a new system.

I havent found any writers that seemed better than those two sony's but were still prosumer.

I don't see how price makes it last longer... I think any of these drives listed above are going to last you at least until the HD/BluRay burners are affordable. I'm in year #3 with this Pioneer and it's still kicking... and you could buy ten of them for $400!

Just wanted to make + investment but with blueray and HD DVD I guess theres no reason to untill those become cheaper.

I just like the inputs on the sony in case something goes south with my computer I can still record from a camcorder.
