I keep hearing everybody say that they have home owners or renter's insurance and that covers your gear.
My State Farm agent says "no"... they say that you can insure up to $5k in total gear under a policy, but that unusual big ticket items like "professional cameras" raise an eyebrow... they want me to go with a business insurance package that will run me about $400/yr to cover all my gear.
Essentially what we're talking about is coverage for around $12-14K... but all I really want to do is cover the $8K or so that I bring with me on location. The $8K is fairly constant with just a mic or pole changing out... some of my gear is like that... several hypers, poles, pods... and I bring whatever I want for a particular shoot. All I ever worry about is whatever that selection of stuff happens to be ON LOCATION.
I'm due to leave the country next week... and I was told that the production was insuring my gear... well they just told me that they are NOT insuring my gear so I figure it's time to finally face this issue.
Is there a company with reasonable rates to insure either $8K (location) or $14K (total) gear package?
I guess $400/yr with $500/deductable isn't too unreasonable... but I started out thinking I could get $8K coverage for $150... so I'm a little bummed. I'm doing a job for charity (once again) and so far the bill for my donation just keeps going up.
Any info you guys can offer me would be VERY appreciated! Is everybody just trying to do this on home owner's? I hope to get a reply suggesting some company that will handle this $8K location amount on it's own deal... like a personal property policy or something.
