Cinemek G35 News

What I was getting to was, "what is your reference" and sorta questioning if you were making a valid comparison. I'm fairly certain everything posted for public consumption on the Red Rock website was shot in SD, with the exception of some Z1 stuff. I think you will agree that most compressed video for the web may not the best barometer with which to base an assessment? (with the Wolves and Pappas Market shots being the possible exceptions).

I'd like to see a shootout when the G35 becomes available but, then again, despite all efforts at fair testing of the HVX and competitors, even some of the participants could not agree on all of the results. Gives credence to the old saying, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

BTW, the present GG has been out since November.

a few months?? thats odd, i also emailed him about the first shipments and this is what i got.

Thanks for the email. So we are on track to start limited shipments in Late May. There are a few hang ups that cause that to be June (mounts mainly)

Cheers,

I knew you'd have to chime in here sooner or later, Richard.
I, like you, was holding out for the G35 ever since I saw some really nice sharp footage from it a while back. The look was way superior to the redrock at that time, BUT, the recent M2 footage is totally sweet!

By the way, RGD, what the hell is that song with the chimes and snare drum on your "Reel-06" clip which opens with a mirrored shot of a building? Not from Eternal Sunshine is it?

Here' s my speculation for what it's worth...

There will probably be a big difference between the G35 we all WANT and the G35 we will GET. The G35 that received so much acclaim and spawned these feelings of relentless, psychotic anticipation was in fact, the beta version and that is a static adapter.

I don't think ANYONE has seen a moving beta version of the G35 and I expect the moving adapter will be different from what we've seen. It's an entirely new approach altogether. From my understanding, the decision to move from a static design to a moving design was not voluntary on Cinemek's part. I believe it was a legal issue. Because of that, I speculate the transition from designing the static adapter to the moving adapter ended up presenting a great deal of problems for Cinemek. That is why it has taken so long to iron out the kinks.

With all that being said, I am still anxious to see if it lives up to the hype the beta version has generated for Cinemek. Bring it on!!!

I also agree that the G35 demo footage looks a lot better than the M2 footage. Take a look at some of the M2 demo footage from here, e.g. this comparison. It is heavily compressed but it clearly shows the resolution loss. And that is just SD. That might be improved with the latest GG, there was some HVX + M2 footage here that looked better but still...

Further the bokeh rendering of the M2 is very video-ish, check out busgirl1 and busgirl2. That may be the reason why the footage still looks like video with added DOF instead of giving a more film like image. More on bokeh here.

In comparison check out the footage on the cinemek homepage. Or check out the SIMILO short by MacGregor. This is the look I am after. And I know that I can achieve that with the G35. And, there will be 2 different versions of the G35 with different bokeh rendering. I might get both.

I am sure that everyone who now has a M2 will also get a G35 once it is released and more footage is revealed. Especially in HD. It will be that much better.

And I am sick of people telling, "If they don't release it within two months, I'm going for something else". Do you really think the Cinemek team is not working as hard as they can? I am sure they are doing 10h workdays, 7 days a week since more than half a year now, just to get the G35 out.

If you have a project next month and the G35 isn't out till then or you are not even on the preorder list for the first 200 items yet, make sure you order a M2 in time you get it till your shot.

For the moment I am glad for everybody who drops out of the G35 preorder list and goes for a M2 - because that means that I will get my G35 sooner.

:nads:

I do not think there will not be two G35's to buy. That's why this is such a mysterious product at this point. The G35 seen in "SMILIO" was the static beta adapter and you will not be able to buy the static adapter. Those that received the static beta adapter were lucky. In fact, I do not like the fact that Cinemek is posting "demo" films that use the static adapter because they will not be selling it! Unless the moving adapter matches the static adapter step by step, it seems like false advertising to me.

This speculation is hilarious.

At f2.8 with heavy filtration (even SD on the dvx) the static adapter has horible, unusable static grain. (Then again, by heavy filtration I mean a polarizer and an 85B filter.)

It was not a legal issue. It was a quality issue. It was clearly explained by Jonathan that the static GG had visible grain in HD. That's why they are now doing a moving one.

that's a double negative. So, yes, Jonathan said there WILL be two G35's to buy.

To worry that the new & improved G35 will somehow not be as good as the static demo footage makes no sense to me. Come on, have a little faith. There will be new demo footage in due time that will prove it, I'm sure. Just wait til MacGregor gets the new G35...:)

I can understand why the cinemek guys shut down their forum for now. Some impatient people kept whining and making wild accusations.
(not you Howdydoo, but others were quite annoying/childish) When it returns, Cinemek should make their forum a real-names-only forum like Redrock's, so people will be more prone to act like grown-ups.

I think people were just getting pissed off because they kept pushing dates back and were not being faithful to their customers.. oh well, I wish the best for them.. I am on order for the m2..

:)

Things would have been better if they didn't promise something on a monthy basis that also failed to happen on a monthly basis. :(

yes, i agree. If it werent for all the pushed back dates, everyone wouldnt be so impatient. I BET it's gonna be released sometime in the summer....... next year?

I just get annoyed because my income, like many of us on DVXuser, comes in waves. I'm willing to hold out funds in between waves to ensure I can pay the full amount when my pre-order number comes up. But... they keep making it sound like "next week...." so I'll set aside money and then give up a few weeks after that and put it back into my day to day budget. It is for this reason I welcome the new "We'll tell you when" policy.

Then again... some sort of generalizations on their part would be nice so that I can switch to another product if it isn't coming out, relatively soon.

It's very difficult to plan your expenditures when the release date is being toyed over your head on a string.

so in short... they're damned if they do and damned if they don't, but they get a little bit of blessing if they sort of do to just the right degree. How long is the waiting list on M2 orders?

Seriously who cares. When it comes out, it will come out. And I'm sure it will be a great thing. Nobody is needing this for their "major motion picture" that has to be shot at the end of May or whatever BS people are yacking about. If that was the case, you could go rent a mini35.

Damn it don't people go outside and lead lives anymore? Leave Cinemek alone and go and enjoy the sunshine. Or have sex. Maybe read a book or two. Do something.

This is an older version of the adapter - we have since removed the clip since it no longer represents the quality of the current M2.

Busgril was shot with an even *older* version - a prototype adapter we built in a garage combined with a Sony Z1. However, I think the guys did an outstanding job with an interlaced camera that doesn't shoot 24p.

There have been numerous improvements than just the gg. The latest postings represent the curent product.

Thanks
