Cinemek G35 News

Does anyone on this forum know Jonathan or any of the guys at Cinemek? Are they still working on somthing? Has the project been abandoned? Someone around here has to have had contact with them. Just curious on an update.

Seems to have gone completely quiet. A shame as competition is always good in any field but by now Redrock have basically cleaned up anyway.

If Cinemek ever get a product out I for one will take a look, even though I am happy with the M2.

What I hope is happening is they're staying quiet until the product is ready to roll out. Although they may have lost potential buyers, they can now have more time to focus on the production, and don't have to worry about 4 or 500 emails a day asking when units will be ready.

The trouble is, the devise is quite simple and it's difficult to see where improvements can really be made to make the Cinemek a better buy than the M2. All it is is a box, a small motor and a ground glass. If the GG has been optimised to its best potential, where is the future improvement going to come from?

In tests the Redrock M2 has proved to be a winner, with almost no light lost. So Cinemek need to make an adaptor with no light loss.

The M2 is very keenly priced. So the Cinemek has to be even better priced.

The M2 has excellent support. So the Cinemek manufacturers need to at least match it.

The new GG with the M2 is excellent. Can Cinemek improve on it?

Redrock have just released a 72mm High Def acromat for the Sony, JVC and Panasonic cameras. Is Cinemek going to do the same?

Lots of questions that need answering. No good just matching the M2. The Cinemek adaptor needs to beat it hands down. And that is going to be very difficult to do.

As I said further up the thread, competition in specialised fields like this are only good for the consumer. I hope that both products continue to develope and improve, though feel there is not a lot further one can go with a 35mm adaptor other than cosmetically, and perhaps have a big built in rechargable battery.

The parent directory of their webpage has been updated for the first since early April, so something's on the way.

I have the beta unit and I'm very excited, by the way, since it's awesome. The choice to go with moving GG was smart, since it is nearly perfect in all ways except light loss, grain, and the image flip. Looks like they'll be adressing two of those concerns.

Are you going to be selling your beta once the new units are released? :):)

well it needs to happen soon as I got a show to shoot and an adapter to purchase.... I think the footage I've seen off the beta looks sweet, but I can't hang out for another 6-9 months. Maybe 1-2 would be the max..

I sent an email to Cinemek a few days before NAB. I received this email yesterday:

Thank you for your email. I appologize for the delay in response, we just got back from NAB and have been inandated with emails. We have been working very hard and we expect to start shipping in the next few months. Our Price is set at $1300 (which includes camera and lens mounts). Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Cheers,
Jonathan Houser

Not much new info. At least we know it'll definitely be released this year.

Looks interesting and homemade at the same time! However, I wouldn't but much faith and trust in a company that can't even host it's own video.. Having to go to a free offsite server just doesn't speak security to me...

Also the price isn't that great.. so why would anyone go ofter this instead of the redrock?

That's promising.

I feel that the G35 still loses far less rez than the M2, but maybe that's changed with the last M2 update.
Also, the G35 seems to add some lattitude. I don't know if the M2 does similarly.

And I'd worry about the hastle of always having to be connected to a rail system. Not a feature worth the extra money in itself, but I like how the G35 can just attach onto the front of the cam with no extra accessories needed.

The construction of the G35 also strikes me as more professional and better manufactured and rugged, but maybe someone has worked with both and would think otherwise.

did you have one of the beta G35s? It's been so long since the boards were up I don't remember who's who (except for MacGreggor because of the hot girl that he used for his picture :D)

I still will be holding out for my G35. I bought the iFocus in the meantime because I just could not wait to have some 35mm fun! Looks great and was really nice to work with Chris.

I really want the Cinemek for my HVX and hope it happens sooner than later.

If the G35 is going the moving GG way, you'll need rails for that too because it'll be alot bigger and front heavy.

If you think the G35's construction is professional, have you seen the M2? They're really professional.

I have a bad feeling that Cinemek is just Jonathan, in his boxers, sitting in his basement. What kind of customer service will you get from a company that can't even keep their website running. It still hasn't been updated to include the sample footages after the crash.

Just get the M2. I guarantee that the G35 is not gonna be that much better than the M2, unless Cinemek discovered a GG that no one else knows about.

I want to start by saying I wish Jonathan & Company all the sucsess in the world . . . competition is usually a good thing. You're saying you "feel" the the G35 loses less rez and that it adds some latitude, so I gotta ask: Have you used one or are these just feeling? Not trying to be an as* but if you are going to make those statements you (IMHO probably) should qualify them.

If you're not worried about the stress on the lens then good for you. Speaking for myself, rails are an absolute . . . especially if you are going to compliment your equipment with a mattebox, or maybe a follow focus.

Again, I go back to 1 (above), have you actually used them or just looked a pictures on a website? I've had my M2 since November and have been very satisfied (now that I have a working HVX to attach to it). I'm not pimping for Red Rock . . . people generally like what they buy (or bought, and I'm no different in that regard), some get Chevys and others Fords. The main thing the M2 has going for it is that it is available right now and continues to be improved.

.

I "feel" that's true based on the footage I've seen. I've never seen shooting situations with the M2 where the lattitude looks any different than what I'd expect from normal DV; G35 footage consistently shows off a lattitude that looks more like film, even in outdoor shots where it would be impossible to control the lattitude with light. Maybe I need to be shown a bad batch of M2 footage.
All of the footage from the M2 that I've seen reminds me of that feeling you get after using eyedrops. I want to keep blinking and reajusting my focus until I see things right, and this is the same feeling I get watching most M2 footage; it always looks slightly blurry--not low-rez, but blurry.
Maybe I got a bad sample of M2 shots though and maybe they've updated the GG since then, you tell me.
