With so many questions of legality and reality regarding immigrant issues recently, we should all be reminded of the true story, and suffering, behind the celebrations:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England.

In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz,Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York. *This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever
delivered to Mexico....

But as we know .... the great ship did not make it to New York, much less Vera Cruz*.... The ship hit an iceberg and sank .... and the precious cargo was forever lost ....

The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery .... were disconsolate at the loss ....

Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning which they still observe to this day ....

The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th .... and is known .... of course .... as El Sinko de Mayo ...

bad taste... bad timing. i hope this thread is deleted.

Now, that's funny, even to a Mexican because, I hope you know that Mexicans
do not celebrate Cinco de Mayo as their indepenence day. It is the 16th of
September. Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican-American excuse for a party. Tish

that was hilarious!

silly! funny!

Folks, I live at ground zero for PC and the above comments were unsolicited and sent to me. The last three years, I have spent each winter in Mexico. I do not see that this is tasteless and should be banned from the board, nor did I want to start a taste in jokes controversy. I, and many others, think it is funny. I am sorry some of you do not, and please understand this is, to me, and others, in absolutely no way intended to humiliate anyone in any way.....
Gracias y Hasta

Oh, it's a joke. I was thinking that I didn't really know what the day is about.

IMO, jokes about race are generally in bad taste... and not someting i expect or would like to see on dvxuser. we all like to have a laugh here but i think posting jokes about race sets a bad precedent.

i'm sure you don't want to offend.. but i think this would have been better kept in your inbox.

I agree, whether one does not mean the joke as offensive, cracking them about race is unjustified and it does insult people. I'm all about taking things lightly, but we have to take responsibility and understand by making these types of jokes is just adding to the problem, and not creating any sort of solution.
