my version of the fig rig

Well, the" troop " is from being an army brat , and the clamps are for a mic and/or light connection. I used it to seperate the mic from the camera when I was shooting and didnt have a boom man - kind of a run and gun approach.

Congrats, Army-brat!!! and please pass on to your parent(s), THANKS FOR THEIR SERVICE! **salute**

I am a 19 year AF veteran myself.. still active duty, still one more year to go!! Then Im unleashed on the real world.. moohahahahhahahaha

:-)

you dont plan to reup??? LOL - Plans after service? Get into the indie film biz? Its an open field, full of potential (and pitfalls) but why not , right? Best part of being an army brat - all the travel. Gave me a "real" world education. And the chance to teach civilians the differance between a "base" and a "post". :)

Nah.. 20 years is my limit.. :-)

I agree about the education.. especially as a servicemember.. wouldn't trade it for the world.

Wow wish I thought about bending the PVC b4 i built mine. ust wondering...is the baseplate screwed into the rig with 1 screw or more? I have pvc rig also except mine isn't as cool since I didn't bend the PVC and I didn't attach my baseplate yet.

The base plate is threaded into a single screw running all the way thur the pvc, with a nut on the inside of the endcap to secure it in place so it wont move when you thread the plate on the top. Hope this makes sense. If you look at the closeup shots you'll see the bottom of the screw sticking out.

Looks great Troop. I noticed that your drawing indicates that a 4-way or "cross" piece is used at the point where the camera is attached. However, in your photos, this piece is clearly a "T" connector. Which piece should I use?

Thanks.

i think i know what you are saying troop. so the bolt is in place and won't move? am I wrong? but is there a chance that the base plate can be rotated accidentally? I may actually screw the base plate one with 2 bolts. I believe one is bgger then the other. 5/16? and 1/4? i forget but something along those lines. Troop, how long did it probably take to bend the pvc itself? like an hour? it looks so perfect! I don't know if i can ever bend it so perfectly like that.

That's right slinks, and once the base plate is screwed down on the bolt tightly, it shouldn't move (at least it hasnt moved on me yet). Let me know how you get the second bolt to lock the plate in place. As for the pvc bending - about an hour because i kept working it into the circle and letting it cool down and then working it some more. Just take your time, but I know thats easy to say but hard to do because i'm the impatient type myself. LOL

hey man, i think that's a great idea so you wouldn't have to bend the tube which is a hassle, but i'd add the feet to it like mine because its easier to just put it down anywhere instead of having to hang it up....so maybe we can combine them....what do you think? DIY is about getting the best for less and both have good ideas for a heck of a lot less than the expensive one being sold. So where did you get the roll pvc from?

Im thinking of frankensteining these 2 designs together. i like the rigidity of troops thicker walled pvc along with the base foot and OD's cross member design.

will let you know what i come up with once my heat gun arrives.

home depot....if you wanted greater rigidity just use 3/4" - its rock solid...the 1/2" one is really solid once the aluminum cross-bar is added

i suppose if you got a + shaped piece that fit the male-to-male connector you could just Lego them together...a stand is actually no good for my application tho

have fun!

After I got back from using the FigRig at NAB, I was building a saltwater filtration system with HD PVC (Home Depot, not HiDef :) ). Had a bunch of parts and the lightbulb switched on. Used 3/4 PVC. Black plastic spray paint, then black grip paint. Tennis grip to add the pro touch, no pun intended. The result after a couple hours:

Used it at a wedding and at home chasing my dog. Love it. Was thinking of different mounting options which yours has. Very cool! Where'd you get the quick mount and what model?

I love DIY. Cool how a lot of people think alike eventhough we're far away. Maybe we should start a DIY open source group and everyone adds to the design. Get a investor and a machine shop in China. :badputer:

wow, that is really something...my problem is i'm just too lazy to make all those fine angles you've done (too much thinking and cutting. LOL). I like youre idea about an open DIY source group because there are so many great ideas out there for production equipment. I'm working on a pnematic 4-wheel dolly now because the skateboard wheel ones seem like too much to deal with. I want to get on the dolly and go, not have to worry about all the track and leveling it ..so we'll see. I"ll post it when im done.

Fig Rig RING

Fig Rig RING

I found this at Target and thought someone might be able to add the cross beam.

Would love to know how to build the crossbeam.

Thanks,
