There was a film released recently (within past year or two), which was:

1) A horror. Story was about some American tourists who get terrorized (and probably killed) by crazed Eastern European locals (I think).

2) Low budget, Indy, and was moderately successful (at least I saw it mentioned in the press several times.)

3) Filmed somewhere in Eastern Europe. I'd like to say Romania, but I extensively googled Romania (and neighboring countries) and didn't find anything. The horror-film sites don't have anything either.

4) This filmed caused a bit of a scandal in said Eastern European country, because they thought that tourism would drop as all the Westerners would think that the country is filled with crazies.

That's all I can remember. Anyone know what this film is?

Yeah, that's Hostel.

To answer your second question before you ask it; yes, it was awful.

Second opinion: It wasn't that horrible. Horrible, what happens in the movie, but the movie is definately bearable to some.

If you like Cabin Fever (don't know if anyone did) you'll dig this one. Pretty much Roth doin the same thing but on a bigger budget.

And hey, it's definately not When a Stranger Calls or the Fog remake, so that puts it one up on the lot.

But what happened in the movie wasn't all that bad. I mean yes, it was disgusting in principal, and if it were real it would be awful. But they didn't show anything that was over the top, that we haven't seen a million times before. And I didn't feel like it was done in such a way that I was even sold on the violence.

That's just my thought though, and I must say that as I typed that statement, it dawned on me that perhaps I'm very desensitized to it.

Yeah, i'm only mildly desesnsitized to violence (seen Dead Alive and the Evil Deads, nothing too bad) but the guy i saw it with said it was really freaky and super gorey. So, to each their own.

I hadn't seen it a million times before, I don't get out to see movies like that much, so maybe there are better ones. The last twenty minutes pretty much made the movie for me though. and all the boobs. God I'm such a teenager.

I grew up on horror films. In the eighties/early early nineties there was quite a large community of super-8 horror-film makers (of which I was one).

Now that I have a son, I'm re-building my horror-film collection so he'll have a proper education in the subtleties of the genre. Although at this age "Happy Tree Friends" is his favourite -- "Suspiria" will have to wait a bit...

BTW: I'm fresh out of jibs, but have a bunch of HVX's -- would that do?

Blasphemy! Argento should be viewed at an extremely early age. At least start the kid out with Tenebre or Profondo Rosso.

Definitely Profondo Rosso. It even stsrts with a lovelly childlike song.

La la la la, lalalala lalalalala, la la la lala la, lalala la la la!!!!

Hey Filmmakerr, why did you feel Wolf Creek was better? I saw both around the same time although I did think Hostel was kinda teeny bopy, I thought it was better than Wolf Creek. They both, like many modern horror movies, had a terrible ending but I thought Hostel was more entertaining throughout the movie. Yeah so I am a sucker for hot woman, but I just felt Wolf Creek was very predictable and some things just didnt flow for me. And no I am not an Eli Roth fan either, I hated Cabin Fever!!! But anyways why did you like wolf creek?

Well, I'm a huge fan of realistic movies, stories, and directed movies.

Hostel didn't give me that realistic feel, Wolf Creek did, everything that happened in Wolf Creek I can see happening, but things that happened in Hostel I really can't see happening, sure some of it possibly, but many others are just made up to scare people.
