Trouble with 5.1 and 24pA clips and sequence

I have 5.1 installed on the latest version of MacOSX.

-I shot 3 clips on P2 at 1080/24pA.
-I opened FCP and created a new project. I've tried this multiple times using various -HD1080i and DVCProHD 1080i presets and changed the editing timebase to 23.98.
-Imported Panasonic P2 and selected the "Remove dupl/adv. pulldown frames" check box.
-The clips play fine in the Viewer.
-Then I tried playing the clips back in the timeline. I got a "Render" indicator for video, but the audio played fine without render.
-I looked at the clips in the bin and found them to be at a resolution of 1280x1080. I thought this was odd because I thought 1080 is supposed to be 1920 horizontal. They also show as 29.97fps instead of 24fps.
-I was able to conform the clips in Cinema Tools to get the picture to play back in the Canvas without rendering, but my sequence and project have to be set to 1280x1080.
-Once the clips are conformed in Cinema Tools the audio is changed to 38.84kHz in and requires rendering in the timeline.

How can I get these clips imported at 1920x1080 like they're supposed to be?
How can I get FCP to recognize the clips as 24p without conforming in Cinema Tools?
If I have to use Cinema Tools, how do I keep the audio at 48kHz so I don't have to render the audio?
How can I get the sequence to be created with 16bit audio like it's supposed to be?

If for some reason the clips have to be 1280 horizontal because that's the way the Panasonic camera records them, then why would I shoot 1080 and not 720 if the 1080 is really interlaced to start with? 720p will take up less space and give me the ability to use variable frame rates.

I tried the Reverse Telecine process mentioned in an earlier thread and that worked. The audio shows up as 48kHz. The problem is that Reverse Telecine process takes some time. If I'm shooting an entire feature in 1080/24pA it will be a PITA and time consuming process just to get all the clips into FCP 5.1. Is there an easier way?

Also, Cinema Tools shows the Picture Track of the clips is 1920 x 1080, but FCP shows them as 1280x1080. Which is correct? I'm assuming CT is correct, so how do I get FCP to give me the full resolution?

1280x1080 is the full rez and is what you want - anamorphic HD1080 @ 1280x1080 = 1920x1080. The pixels are stretched in the panny codec. And if you use the 1080i preset and change the rendering advanced option to be 23.976 progressive you should be set.

i don't think I understand what you mean by that. How can 1280 x 1080 = 1920 x 1080? If the camera stretches the image, then we're not getting true 1080. True 1080i and 1080p are supposed to be 1920 x 1080. And isn't 720p supposed to be 1280 x 720?

the pixels are horizontal but the recording stores them as square. With The Canon & Sony HDV cameras, they store it as 1440x1080. Panny does it at 1280x1080 & 720p = 960x720. In FCP, you use anamorphic 1.5 on the 1280 which = 1920.

The Panasonic is not anamorphic. If we were to use anamorphic adapters would we get a higher resolution of 1920x1080?
