How do you use the DVX100A as a transfer to external monitor?

Hello everyone! Hope you are all shooting everyday!

I just finally bought a JVC TM-H150CG monitor for editing. It's a wonderful thing so far, but I can't seem to get my FCP 4.0 timeline/canvas/viewer to come up on the monitor.

Since I don't want to pluck down another $200 for the little box that changes the digital signal to a "video" (analog?) signal, the guy at the shop told me to use the DVX100A as the transfer unit.
He said to output from the computer to the camera via firewire (did that) and then from the camera to the monitor via S-Video (did that too). Then I am supposed to set my playback output to NTSC Firewire (well, of course ;) and supposedly that will get me signal to my "external" (not my computer's, but the JVC) monitor to be able to edit footage and view it on a color correction monitor at the same time. I should see it on my computer's monitor AND the JVC.

However, I get signal to the JVC only when I play a tape in the camera on VCR mode (it's the footage on the tape that I see) and when in "camera" mode (it is the live footage my camera is shooting at that time)

Just can't seem to get my FCP timeline/canvas/viewer window footage to come up on the JVC. I tried messing with the DVX's settings and FCP settings but to no avail.

Anyone know what's going on? I called the guy back, but of course he doesn't care anymore cause he has my money and he hasn't returned my call yet. This site ROCKS and all you guys RULE! I know I can count on my fellow filmmaker/tech-heads for advice!

Thanks in advance. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Make sure you go to View>Refresh A/V Devices
and
View>External Video>All Frames

If you've done that, ignore this post.

Try this:

In the top menu,

Goto

view > click refresh a/v devices

Then,

view > video playback > select apple firewire NTSC (720 x 480)

Then,

view > external video > select all frames

Should work if you still have it set up as you described above.

EDIT: DVX should be in VCR mode

Yes! Success! Thank you all. Who would've thought there was an external video selection hidden in the "view" menu of all places.

But the thing is there was none of:

1. view > click refresh a/v devices
(not in menu at all)

or

2. view > video playback > select apple firewire NTSC (720 x 480)
(this was not in the menu either, but under A/V settings, but I already had this set anyway)

Now the funny thing is whenever I click to another application, the image disappears from the external monitor. This also happens even when clicking to a menu within FCP. Is this a normal occurance?

Once again, you guys have thrown me a life preserver. This is the greatest friggin community of filmmakers on the net!!!

Thanks again. :costumed-smiley-047

Maybe different version? I'm using 5.0.

This doesn't happen to me unless I am using another program that is also using the FireWire and DVX (ie: Shake). Never goes away when I click a FCP menu. Not sure about this one.

Glad you got it working.

and another...

and another...

Also, I switched my audio playback to DV firewire and I hear it through the camera, but cannot hear it from the monitor.

The reason for doing this is because there is a slight delay (about .5 sec) for the video to reach the monitor after the audio comes out of my computer's speakers. If I can get the audio to the monitor I could just watch the image AND listen to the audio from the external monitor and it will be in sync.

Anyone know how to do that?

Thank you much!

hmmm...yeah weird. I clicked on Safari to reply to these posts and it happened. I clicked on the A/V menu in FCP and it happened.

I am using 4.0...

I hate to ask this, but you did plug in some analog audio cables form the DVX to the monitor right? If DVX is in VCR mode and the audio cables are in, you should have sound on the monitor. Especially if the footage is getting to the monitor. Hmmm

If you have a receiver and some speakers nearby, you could also just plug into the receiver and it should be in sync as well. Might give you better sound quality.

well i thought S-video would carry an audio signal as well. (never used it before)
...but I guess it doesn't. So I will try doing RCA audio out from the camera to the monitor. But now I gotta go get an RCA to BNC adapter for that. So it will have to wait until manana. There's always something, isn't there? Haha...

Thanks for the help. If it still doesn't work after that, I'll come on and whine some more.

well, i didnt need the BNC adapter after all...never assume anything. I was too tired to even crawl behind my monitor last night (this morning). But it's only a mono RCA (in) jack for audio, and the speaker is tiny. Guess it'll have to do until I can afford more space to put a sound system in like you said. Still haven't hooked it up yet. Annoying website work took precedence of the day, but I will post with the outcome as soon as I hook it up. Everything should be fine. But again, never assume...heh.

Keep on shootin everyone!

there is a TINY delay when between what you see in the canvas window and what you see in the Monitor. Just be carefull if like me you use your computer speakers because they are better than the tiny monitor speaker. I edited all my sound effects frame by frame to hit exactly where i wanted them and then after i burned a dvd and watched in on the TV, I started to notice, 'wait... all the sound effects are seems to be about 3 frames early'. I don't know if it was 3 frames but either way it was small but noticable.

And yeah I use 4.5 and when i click to safari my monitor goes blue, doesnt happen when i click on the menu though
