An mpeg-4 file with the H.264 codec would probably be your best bet, but it requires the viewer to have Quicktime 7.

Thanks for your reply.
correct me if you think i am wrong.
mpeg 4 is a lousy quality and given H264 is a hdv format.

what about swenson 3 comparing with mpeg 4 ?
i have been using swenson 3 format all along .
and its work with pc as well.

I'm sorry, but I believe you are incorrect on both accounts. Mpeg4 is becoming a standard for video on the web, and I've never heard of H.264 being limited to HDV. I've had good results between the two.

On the other hand Sorenson does a decent job, but I've come to find that H.264 produces a smaller file size, and H.264 is fine for both Mac and pc, but QuickTime 7 is required for both. If you've been using Sorenson all along then why change? If you don't want to take my word for it, then do some experimenting with the both of them and see what you find out.
