How to apply an effect to half your image?

I am playing around with some looks in FCP. I keep turning the effect on and off to compare before and after, but there must be a better way.

What I would like is to be able to drop effects on a clip and then when I watch the clip I just want half of the clip (top vs bottom or left vs right) to be effected.

I'm sure there is a quick and dirty method to do this. Any suggestions?

Chris,

Give this a try. Duplicate your clip just above your original clip. That makes it the dominant clip. Now use the crop tool to crop the new clip to "half frame", either top or bottom, left or right. Apply your effect to the top clip, render and watch the two, that should do it for you. :)
