the ol' aspect ratio dilemma... please help!

I've been working on editing a project for a friend of mine... All the other footage he sent me was regular 60i 4:3. (he had someone film it with some broadcast type camera, don't know what kind)

Anyhow, he sent me the last of the footage today, and low and behold it's 24p Widescreen! (he used his DVXa for this footage; not letterboxed, but "squeezed" Widescreen (1.2 I think it says under properties)).

Now, I'd prefer to simply convert the captured footage to 4:3 and 60i, to fit with the rest of the project (I have a timer and titles on the track above; would actually be quicker to convert to 60i 4:3, then put in with the old, like footage.)

So... EXACTLY how do I convert this 24p Widescreen 1.2 to 60i 4:3 without distortion or terible motion blur?

And if that's not possible, how do I convert it to simply 4:3, leaving it at 24p if necessary?

help if you can!

thanks

Hi Grover - you can convert widescreen to 4:3 footage using pan/crop on the event. In the pan/crop window you can select 4:3 (I think it may be called default) from the presets drop down menu, and then adjust the cropped area (if necessary). Basically, you're throwing away the sides of the widescreen footage and zooming in on the 4:3 area in the center of it.

Regarding the framerate - if you are working in a 60i timeline, just leave the footage as 24p and Vegas will apply the appropriate pulldown when you render to MPEG2 or AVI. That particular footage will have the filmish "judder" to it even in the rendered result, so it may look a bit different from the rest of your interlaced project. In terms of "converting it," I don't know if you can actually create 60i footage from 24p - and I'm not sure you'd want to anyway...

Hope that helps!

cool, thanks...

cool, thanks...

Thanks, I knew I could crop, wasn't sure the best method... Same as frame rate. While I've toyed with aspect ratio, it's never been on an important project like this one.

Anyhow, I'll consider your advice, THANKS!

24p is already 60i on tape. If you want to stay in 60i, shoot with standard pulldown, not advanced pulldown -- this will give you the smoothest motion.
