NAB Watch: New HMI Lights on the Market?

Hey NABers, please be on the lookout for any 'inexpensive' HMI light packages. Of course, the term "inexpensive" is relative to the subject of price of HMI lights in the real world of 2006.

I'm just wondering if there will be any new HMI fixtures announced by the traditional players in this market or if any upstarts are on the horizon.

In recent years, there have been newer offerings in the fluorescent lighting market by Kino Flo, Lowell, and newer companies like Flolight. Every year, I get my hopes up that such a thing will happen to HMIs to help revolutionize the pricing of fixtures and lamps. Hope springs eternal...

There was one company (Barry Green would probably remember) that was offering a 200W HMI package but they stopped manufacturing it for some reason.

I'd like to see something along the line of K-5600's Joker Bug series... but for half the price.

I'm looking for:
* electronic ballasts
* 200 - 1,200 Watts
* PARs preferred, fresnels possible.

Britek had some 400w HMI open-face lights; if you want cheap ones I'll sell 'em both (and for less than half the cost of one Joker Bug).

But I have heard tell that there is at least one indie company dedicated to doing exactly what you ask for: a Joker-style light at half the price. It's only in development, not anywhere near release yet, but with guys like FloLight and MattInSTL out there and with the revolution in 35mm adapters, I wouldn't be surprised if this comes to fruition sooner rather than later.

Thanks for the reply, Barry. Does the company you mention have a website that I can check out? I'm anxious to see what hits the market in the next 12 months.

I'm planning a feature and plan to rent some lights, but I'd love to have a small kit for shooting some scenes with a skeleton crew.
