External Disk Drive Speed Requirements Needed For FCP Capture

Does anyone know what is the minimum disk speed required to write DVCPro HD as it is captured in FCP. I have used 7200 RPM drives and it works fine. I would like to use 5400 RPM drives since they are about 1/2 the price.

On the road I will need about 500 GB of portable storage that can be powered by the laptop. I am buying 5 firewire 2.5" drive enclosures and putting 100 GB drives in them. It seems like the 5400 RPM drives should be able to keep up with the Firewire stream.

I just got an external 100 gig Seagate, a 2.5" drive, 5400 rpm, USB2, and it captures 720p no problem. I haven't tried it with 1080 flavors yet. The host computer is a MacBook Pro 2GHz.

I did an experiment and used an external 4200 RPM drive for capturing Video from the camera through FCP and it worked fine. It seemed to take a little longer to offload a P2 card to however.

Where the external HD powered via the USB cable? What model is this drive?
