Final Fantasy: Advent Children (Not the old one)

if you say shrek I'll piss my self laughing.

Well, opinions are opinions....

But Final Fantasy is probably the best complete CG animated movie I've ever seen, visually. I'd probably laugh if someone said Shrek, as well.

Every single portion of that movie stands out as an almost entirely different entity. From the pews in the church scene to the freaking falling building structure in the finale battle.

So beautiful... and that's me not even watching it at DVD quality.

it could have ben told with people. final fantasy shot wise couldnt been.

I wouldn't say there's no way in hell that Advent Children could've been shot with people... but I'm going to say there's no way in hell that Advent Children could've been shot with people. (That's not a mistake.)

The fight direction is outrageous, and it would've probably taken double the budget to complete them with only half the value on screen. It just wouldn't have had the same impact. Maybe a more "organic" one, at best.

Shrek wasn't complicated at all. The comparison between the two pieces is more like--

Shrek is a fantasy tale of dragons and ogres and donkeys... let's make it more like a cartoon but not as cartoony. CGI!

Final Fantasy: Advent children is a fantasy tale of people who save the world from a threat (speaking of Weapon here) born of the earth, using massive blades, magic, and magnificent flying airships (Highwind)... all while retaining equally significant personalities.... we can't make this great with humans without a massive budget... let's do CGI.

exactly. i just love the digital camera use. i mean the limitations of cgi got blown out as soon as i saw it. the camera man the camera.

I haven't even heard of this movie. I'll have to check it out. Thanks kholi.

I'll have to agree about Chrono Trigger. That and Zelda: Link to the Past influenced me greatly. I also liked Tales of Phantasia, and Illusion of Gaia. I was (and am) such a big SNES nerd.

Keep in mind I have not seen this new FF movie, but I think the best CG wizards to me have to be Blizzard. I think they're superior to Square from what I've seen from "The Spirits Within" and that segment from the "Animatrix". They might not be as technically great, but stylistically I have to hand it to Blizzard. Perhaps my opinion lies in not being a big fan of anime. I like the more medieval and organic vibes.

The cut scenes in Blizzard's Warcraft III and Frozen thrown were just awe inspiring, jaw on the floor gorgeous and animated to perfection. I wish that team would make a movie. I sincerely thought those were better than LOTR's visuals. It's closer to my vision of what Tolkien's world would have been like than Peter Jackson's.

Did anyone see the final scene from the Warcraft III addon Frozen Thrown? The one where he climbs the ice tower? I love it.

Are you crazy? The camera is what MAKES that movie, dude. It became as real as any real-life camera man could've done, and more than.

Seriously... I hgihly doubt you could achieve such amazing coverage with real people. It just wouldn't happen.

I've seen the Warcraft III cgi cuts. I like them a lot, Blizzard has come a long way (I wish they'd redo Blackthorne... he was a bad mustard-fux0r.). I'm a serious Square-kid. I've been wanting to be a part of the Square team since Secret of Mana kicked me in the teeth with it's glory boot. Maybe that's why I believe Square's CGI department owns all other CGI' departments in the world.

Even the Kingdom Hearts intros/endings/secret endings were pre-Advent Children... and man do they give me the gooses.

Check out Advent Children, Aaron... seriously. The story will probably lose the masses (as I've said before), but the CGI really runs the show.

By the way (We're always on the same wavelength, Aaron).. I was JUST thinking of doing a Zelda fan film here in CA out about the mountains and such. I had just gone into speculating on how to cut Link and his green clothing against... well.. a green screen. I'd decided to put him in a neon orange costume and then change the color of it in post (similar to the Sin City bandaids and blood techniques.) Then again, I know nothing.. it's just speculation.

Wow. That's exactly what I was thinking. It just really looks like we haven't tried to step onto that higher platform. I guess that's why all of my larger influences are foreign.

I will be sure and check out the new FF movie. It might change my perception. I'm pretty open minded. I'm PMing you about the Zelda film.

There's always arguements on CG boards regarding Square vs. namco... and I say Square's teams are THE best CG artists ever.

It's so cool that you got to work with them. I don't think the story will appeal to the masses, but the cinema is actually like ten times better than Spirits Within.

Well I don't know if you guys have seen it or not but, I think one of my fav CG's when it came out was from capcom. Onimusha 3 intro. OMG that was an amazing intro.

here is a link to it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kt0xwqv3s54

kholi, I'm down around Costa mesa and fountain valley often. I would be down to help you out with your zelda project. May I suggest maybe using a blue screen with link's green clothing? I think that would probably be easier. I also intend to make a game "spoof" sometime so maybe we can collaborate and meet up sometime.

You and Spidey said it. What is the deal? ...or should I say, isn't that always the case.

When film got started, there were all these cool ideas coming from all over the world. Different ideas with the same approach to a new medium that blew every one away. At that point in time, people were driven to see how far they could push film. Hell, they came up with matting processes in the teens that still marvel me technically.

When the CG thing came into the light, it was the same way. But with the US, I think it slowed to the point of, "Hey, this is good. We'll make millions. Let's get Martin Lawrence to do a crazy voice and we will clean up." When they got nice and fat and comfortable, they slipped into their rut and called it a day. Polar Express has several exceptions.

Asian Cinema doesn't seem satisfied with that. They just keep pushing until...I don't know. I've watched the opening of Cashern and Natural City dozens of times and I still marvel. Even their crappy B-movies (you know, the stuff one step above Ultraman) look beter in the CG department. Lucas should be embaraced and go on a diet.

well thats a huge technology difference we find a niche and we stick to it for a long while till we cant really profit off it or something so amazing blows it out of the water.

i real think thats happen already with this but the rarity fact of those seeing it will be high so its very said.

It's more popular therefore more of the animation stuff gets made. I've seen a lot of super corny asian special fx and animation too. It's like so much is created that you're bound to find some real gems in there. It's just a statistical fact. A broken clock is right twice a day.

If you want to see a corny as hell asian film check out:

The Huadu Chronicles: Blade of the Rose

I don't think the lack of advancement is found in this continent or that continent. I think it's found all over, and only cured by a small number of individuals. It depends on what the environment is like to attract those artists. Think of it like all the great scientists that left Germany to be in the US back in the old days. It just depends on the emotional climate.

I do have to agree about how we don't push ourselves anymore like back in the old days. That goes for so many things, though. When the telephone first came into popularity people worked their butts off getting it ran to as many places as possible. The internet should be pushed in the same way. If our ancestors were so strong minded and determined to run telephone lines, why can't we be the same way with fiber optics? Is it because of unions and other hoops and red tape? Is that what is lacking in asia making it easier to get a product made?

When business comes first art usually comes last. That's the sad thing.

Oh, about the Zelda film; I think I might get to play the part of Link! I'm so stoked. We should start another thread about this project.

I can agree with most of the above. The Asian stuff seems to be more magical. Maybe just a little more thought went into every shot. Maybe they don't try so hard to recreate reality, but instead make a new one. Damn it, now I have to think about this.
