Today I received in the post a matched pair of Oktava 012 in black, in a nice wooden box with a couple of shock mounts and two mic bar.

447 euros. I was worried about buying them because they are just sooooo cheap. But I stuck the hyper capsule on the end, plugged it into my HVX and recorded some sound. I was listening to myself speak through the headphone socket, and it sounded echoy and lousy. However, when I played it back, the sound was quite simply.....excellent. In fact I am shocked such great sounding mics cost so very little.

Thanks to the folks on here for pointing me in the right direction. I was originally going to fork out for a matched pair of Scheops CMC6 MK41's. I am now very glad I didn't. These Oktavas fit the bill perfectly.

Cheers
Steve

Welcome to the club Steve! Yeah it sure is shocking when you hear what you're getting for such a small bit of cash isn't it?

I'm sure you could use the savings after getting the HVX.

I have yet to hear ONE person complain about the performance of an Oktava unless they are directly comparing it to a mic at 10X the price... every single person has the same reaction... "amazing for the price"... and I'll kick it up a notch and say it's pretty damn amazing even if they cost 2 or 3 times the price.

Came with a hand written piece inside with all the test monitoring do dar thingies.
Very impressive. I recommend the company I purchased them from for European buyers. Paid by paypal on Monday night and got them today via UPS. In fact I could have had them yesterday but for the driver making an excuses about my address not being right ( of course it was he didn't weant to drive a further 20 miles to drop them off). The driver today apologised for the other guy and said he was a crap delivery man who never delivers his quota every day!

So anyway I agree, they sound so far like they are worth more than 447 euros.......for two of them, matched, with all the caps!

Man, now I'm really excited to get mine. I ordered it from that place in Jersey that Mattin suggested so I should have it on the 24th. I got the black one too, but only one of them. I'm can't afford two right now.

Congratulations Steve! I ordered mine from the Sound Room in New Jersey and am expecting it on the 26th. I also got the 'bello nero' (black beauty). I'm trying to build a good kit from Matt and Jeremy's advice.

Any of you guys going to NAB?

I was hoping to go to NAB, but have a job next week. (Good news, bad news, right?)

As far as the Octavas go, I've heard many big time mixers praise them and I know that they have been used on many big budget projects...usually in the context of...used when I when conditions were such that I didn't want to put my Schoeps at risk...but still high praise. ;-) And, thank you to Matt for connecting all of us to Sound Room...are you at least starting to get commissions? (When I placed my last order, I suggested to them that you should... ;-)

I don't want anything from anybody but to hear that they're happy with the advice I gave... that's all I need to stay in a good mood. Seriously... you'll see how fun it is to get such good results for so little money. I like things that are good and cheap and I like things that are excellent and expensive... I like them both equally... it's a different feeling of satisfaction at both extremes.

I'm just glad to hear that so many of you are having a good experience with this mic (and the sound room).

Kind of like wine, right? You find a really great cheap bottle and you tell all your friends and become a hero, and you find an amazing bottle of 1963 Graham's port for way more money than you should spend, and you just love it. ;-)

I just posted this message in the sticky, but I dont get the impression people read through the whole thing a lot, so i'll post my audio question here again, since it has something to do with the Oktava...

Just read the thread about the different kits. Great resource.
There is just one thing about the whole audio thing I dont understand. The first line TheYankee says about the difference between the hypercardiod and shotgun mics is that one is for indoors and the other for outdoors. But I, audio n00b, thought that you should use a shotgun for conversation, so also indoors... And what about if you want to capture outside area sounds, like traffic noise, or nature things? Should you use a hypercardiod with windcap, or still a shotgun? I've read a lot on here about the audio, but I cant seem to find anywhere what mic to use for what purpose. Probably because a lot of people are only interested in speech, but what about the other things, car sounds, nature, that kind of stuff.

Thanks,

Fredric

The shotgun will still capture the other sounds. you'llstill hear the cars and birds and the soundman farting.

And will the hypercardiod capture the farts too? I mean, what are the differences between a hypercardiod and a shotgun. I've read one is better for indoor and the other for outdoor, but why?

The shotgun is going to be a little more directional, so you will be able to get away with having the mic slightly farther away from the sound source. Shotguns don't sound very good indoors, especially if you are in an area with low ceilings.

i just bought my second oktava mk-012. this time i got it just with the hypercardioid capsule.

the first time i got one in black with all three capsules.

i also got the sabra som shockmount.

i haven't had a chance to try out the shockmount yet.
