This is not the old movie SPIRITS WITHIN which shouldn't have been named Final Fantasy.... but a new movie for fans of the Final Fantasy Seven franchise (Which has spawned to Animes, Graphic Novels, Video Games that revolve around main characters - Dirge of Cerberus w00t - and now, this feature length narrative.

DVD April 25th. I saw this last year but it's finally coming to the states on DVD, so I'll be buying it. It's a completely CG animated movie done by the SquareSoft (Square-Enix...) team, the same company that produces the still-running, still-golden Final Fantasy RPG series.

If you haven't played Final Fantasy Seven/VII (Playstation title), I wouldn't watch this for the storyline. However, I'd watch it just to get a taste of TETSUYA NOMURA's kick ass direction. He's a large influence of mines, as art director, character designer, and director (His directing credits start with Kingdom Hearts, the PS2 video game... but he got into it before then. He also made a digital appearance in Chrono Trigger on SNES HEHEHEHEHE my favorite RPG). I admit to being a total dork.

I have yet to get a taste of the american voice-over, so I can't say how good they'll be... but I'm sure it'll be cool as well.

Watch it for the action, if nothing else!

btw it is awesome, if you even hate FF it is the best looking cgi movie to me. thats cinematography imagery, graphics etc.

Spirits Within sucked, but it proved you don't need actors with animation that realistic. This looks, well, not as sharp as Spirits Within, better story most likely, but more like a FFX cut scene (FFX is the only FF game I ever played and I really liked it, even though it took up 80+ hours of my life).

Overall, well, interesting I guess.

Does this follow the origianl FFVII storyline? I love that game, and now I'm itching to go buy it just to play it again. Hmmm, maybe I'll pick up Chronotrigger too.

I have not played with the game, and have not really liked the film. But it was a huge job.

Its the best cgi film ever.. I think. I was sorely dissapointed with Final Fanasty: The spirits within ... ah that sucks soo much..

I bought a japanese copy off ebay last year and havent gotten tired of watching it yet!

My brother couldn't wait a freakin' couple of weeks for the U.S. version, so he bought the cheaply subtitled version off the internet for $5. I only saw a few little bits of it because I was working out the wireless network in our new house, but from what I saw on first glance, it looks HEAVILY influenced by typical anime formulas and traditions.

I just don't get what's been going on in Japan, they used to be so creative and original, honestly, who could have come up with Project A-ko, Ranma, Tenchi, or even Kekko Kamen? That stuff was just plain cool and funny, now it all just seems to be the same stuff over and over again :undecided.

This isn't to say FF7 Advent Children is a bad movie, it looked uber-cool from what I saw and it looked much better that FF:SW in subtle ways, but if it is as anime-influenced as it looked on first glance, then I'll be just slightly disappointed.

Not having seen the film, but having played the game I think the anime influence is not a big deal. If this movie is supposed to be of the game, then it should have that slight anime influence, considering the game had it. It's nice to see that they're keeping it true to the game, that's what is going to make me go out and buy it.

:)

Yeah, Advent Children wasn't really a story for the masses. You'll get lose in "Who's that?"

Even with the appearance of Loz and Kadaj... I was like "uhhh. Okay?", but then again I loved it because I'm totally Final Fantasy.

It really is the best CGI based movie I've ever seen. Especially the little clip at the end where cloud's riding his speed bike through REAL terrain!!! It looks so awesome.

Even when I watched it last year and the quality was horrid, I still loved it to death.

Super speedy action, you can barely keep your eyes on what the hell is going on. Then, the second or third time around you're like "holy crap!!!!". I really love Mr. Nomura's direction... it's so dope.

The new Kingdom Hearts intro (KH2) Gives me the freaking chills!!!!

TO Jack Felis-- I wouldn't say that Advent Children is really anime influenced at all. A-ko, Ranma, Tenchi, and yes... even Kekko Kamen are all very VERY old. THe newer creators have come up with way sicker stuff presently, and that's why the american marketers are snatching it up like crazy. Eureka Seven JUST finished airing in .JP and now it's playing on Adult Swim, completely subbed, on Saturday's. Needless to say, if you follow that show you'll be quite satisfied with what's being created this generation.

I didn't know there were even a few Final Fantasy fans here. That's cool. ^.^;

Speaking of FF "The Spirit Within", I had the fortunate or unfortunate opportunity of working on this...till I couldn't handle the scripts anymore....it was a good gig living in Hawaii though, and got to work with some top notch Maya artists.

Hopefully this one will be better.

There's always arguements on CG boards regarding Square vs. namco... and I say Square's teams are THE best CG artists ever.

It's so cool that you got to work with them. I don't think the story will appeal to the masses, but the cinema is actually like ten times better than Spirits Within.

Yup, been a fan since Final Fantasy 1 on the NES, though I was too young to understand how to play it. I got back in with FF7, it was the first game I ever got all fanboy over, so I know the game VERY well. After that, I went out and found every copy of Final Fantasy and any other Squaresoft games I could find. I managed to get Secret of Evermore and Secret of Mana for like $10 at KB Toys, both go for like $100+ on eBay at least last time I checked. I even picked up the critically reviled Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, though I have yet to play that one. Unfortunately, my druggy step-cousin stole a bunch of my SNES games and I lost all of them except for Mystic Quest and Secret of Evermore. I'll have to go out and get some of them again, luckily a lot have been remade for the PSOne, eh?

Overall, my favorite Final Fantasy games:

FF4 (2 in the US), FF6 (3 in the US), FF7, FF8, FF9, and FF Tactics

My least favorites:

The Gameboy Final Fantasy games, FFX, FFX-2, any MMORPG Final Fantasy

The rest are okay or I haven't finished playing through them. The NES Final Fantasy I have yet to go through but I'm almost done with the GB Advance version, which was originally on the Wonderswan Color IIRC.

Holy crap, Secret of Evermore!!!! That game was really strange for me. The name brings back really WEIRD feelings.

Nothing ever rivaled Chrono Trigger for me. And nothing probably ever will (Though Kingdom Hearts comes close. )

Oh well yeah, I'd need a whole thread dedicated to Chrono Trigger to describe how much that game affected my imagination and creativity, perhaps it's one of the inspirations towards me wanting to be a filmmaker?:) I'm not sure if I lost that one or not, but I think I might have. Luckily, I've got the PSOne remake, though I had everything maxed out on the SNES version, New Game+ ruled.

well i reiterate it was up for best asian film at for most o the asian film awards. so it is a good movie infact the best visual and composition someone took creative hold of a digital camera and made it work.

I have seen it 1.5 years ago. and I do not think it is the best. there is a lot better cgi film
