im not goin soft or anything...but

Very Kool... About a month ago I was in Fry's wandering around looking to see what DVD jumped out at me when I turned the corner and this dude had a squirrel on a leash... Alrighty then.

(looks like squirrel just assimilated into the family there).

When I was a kid we had a ton of squirrels in our back yard and we used to feed them peanuts in the shell out out back door... by the time I was 5 or so you could ocassionally get one of 'em to take the nuts out of your hand.

One day there was a really small one that I befriended... I saw him every day and decided he was going to be my pet... it got to the point that I could actually hold him! Well being a stupid little kid I decided I needed a cage for him and I put him in a dog cage or something like that... I just put him in there for a minute or so as I stood there proud of myself... when I reached in to get him back out he chirped at me in squirrel talk... I think he was saying, "deal over man... deal over!"... because he went nuts and gave me two bites that gushed blood.

It was my own stupid fault as a little kid doing stupid things... but I learned an important lesson about squirrels that day my friends... do not piss off a squirrel... there's something about their diet that allows them to skate the line of "nature's cuddly little yard rodent" and psychopathic killing machine... his tiny bites hurt so much that I fell to my knees... my face was just low enough to the ground that he was able to give me 1/4 of a black eye with his tiny fist as he left forever.

Okay seriously MOST of that story is true... and the moral of the story is this: If you ever have something cool come into your life don't try to put it in a cage.

I don't care what anyone says... that's just cute. We have two squirrels that live in the tree in our front yard (collectively named "Roger") and a gimpy bunny that lives under our storage shed in the back yard. It's like wild kingdom over here.

Quick, someone snatch up the movie rights so Rich can make an animated disney film about a squirrel that thinks it's a dog that becomes the welterweight squirrel boxing champ of the world.

So cute. :)

Oh My Freeking Soul!!!!

Oh My Freeking Soul!!!!

Thats just too cute for it's own good.
Warm fuzzy...

I hope they don't release that into the wild--

The people making comments are right. It now has like no fear of dogs... it won't last long at all.

But that's way too cool. I want squirrel|dog family.

Wow... that's awesome! I love animals (except the darn coyotes that roam around our yard... that's what gas powered BB weapons are for..LOL

My mom sent this in an email last night, since it pertains to squirrels I thought I'd add it to the thread.

What a cool, fuzzy little guy.

We don't have squirrels in New Zealand so I'd never saw one until I was in holiday in the States. Unfortunately the one I saw was actually only 1/2 a squirrel and a cat was eating it. Yum. :/

I've had a female squirrel that lived around my house for about 2 years. We called her "Foamy." :) She was so sweet. I'd go outside and call to her and she would often come. Sometimes she would even scratch at the door and/or climb the screen to get our attention. We often had her come into our kitchen and carefully interact with our two cats.

Red tree squirrels are generally the most tamable and people-friendly of the species. So I'm not at all surprised that many people have had similar experiences. If you see squirrels on TV or in movies, they almost always are red tree squirrels.

Foamy would take nuts from my hand, let me pet her and climb on me. I always had to be careful because squirrel claws are very sharp and they constantly bite/chew - it's just their nature. She bit me (by accident) only twice before, never drawing blood because she realized my hand was not the peanut she was going for.

We saved her from death - multiple times! I remember when she fell out of a tree and hurt her leg pretty bad to where the nerve damage kept her from walking. And one time she developed some flu-like virus that had her laying quietly at the base of a tree. Both times we brought her to Mary (Squirrel Rescue LA) and she saved her.

Ah, that squirrel . . .

Unfortunately, Foamy disappeared just before this past Christmas. My neighbor had the branches of his trees cut down and I believe that is where she lived. So, I think she may have relocated after the dynamics of the neighborhood changed, at least that's what I like to believe. I think some of her offspring may still be around. There is a young male that is also very friendly and will come down and take peanuts from my hand. He'll also let me touch him, even just briefly. He's very sweet and gentle like his mom.

Now all that being said . . .

Squirrels do not make good pets, especially when they get mature. They are cute little buggers but they are WILD animals. And, honestly, they would be better served by keeping their fear of humans. Also, they don't often carry rabies but might carry tetnus and likely fleas. BTW, there has been an outbreak of the Bubonic Plague in Los Angeles and health services believe that fleas from something like a squirrel may have infected a human.

So, if you mess with squirrels, be careful! :)

So your squirrel was named Foamy, huh? You SURE she didn't have rabies? ;-)
