The "OTHER CAMERAS" forum

My only concern is Terry. I am appalled at how he pokes fun at me. I used to watch the Shazam/Isis hour as a kid!! :(

Heh heh... I used to watch that too. In hindsight, it had supercheesy production values. I love how Shazam is an actor and the elders are 2-D animation. :)

You know, I kinda miss when we only had the DVX, and when the screengrab section was the hottest thing! You posted a frame, and everybody would chime in, analyze, criticize, and in the end you learned a lot.

And when somebody would post any crap and everybody would just go wow, because it was in 24p. Yeah, that was cool too! :D

I remember when I first really started posting on the board a little over a year ago. It was when we were all anticipating the HVX release at NAB. Everyone was talking together and we were a very excited about what was to come. The forum has changed, and although some of us have tried to hold onto the old family feel of things. Others have made that very hard. Arguing that one thing is better then another is pointless. Now giving fact and discussing fact about pros and cons is a good thing. It helps us know what products give us the most for our money. What Jarred has created here is why allot of us are here. We are DVXusers we use the Panasonic AG-DVX100, A, B The Panasonic AG-HVX200 and soon to be red. We use these cameras because as a community they have the traits that we deem as "The right tool for the job" This is not to say that we use these cameras exclusively allot of us use allot of different cameras. But we chose to put our tent in this camp. People should be able to talk about any kind of camera they want. But they should do that on a forum designed for that camera. They will get allot more information from people that put there tent in that camp vs. another. Barry hits the problem right on the head. And although this forum has in my opinion some of the best information about all the cameras, The JVC, The Sony, and The Cannon forum have allot more in depth information on those cameras, and they should. So I guess it just goes back to us wishing it was the good old days where everyone was in the same camp and every one shared information instead of witch camera is better in someone’s own opinion.

Thank you Jarred and Barry and all of the Mods for trying to keep the forum and turning it back into what we love.

Thanks, Barry, for your comments. And also, thank you to everyone else for contributing to this topic.

I can honestly say that I've never lost that DVXUser "family" feeling. I did, however, notice (and very briefly partake in) a lot of the bickering going on. Obviously, the DVX and HVX share a huge amount of commonalities. I never really got why we included other cameras. And I still kinda feel like "Other Cameras" could be done away with. But even if they remain, I'm not really that bothered by it.

This forum, to me and many, has always been a Panasonic (non-sponsored) forum that focuses on the DVX/HVX users. Of course, other categories that compliment these users have been and always will be welcome. "NLE's," "Marketplace," "Jobs," etc. - these are all great too. Even "Still Photography" and "Film" have their place here - DVX/HVX users may very well be dabbling in these areas.

But when someone else uses a completely different brand of camera soley, like a Sony, Canon or JVC, I'm left wondering why we cater to them with their own sub-forums that are hosted by DVXUser? To me, even RED seems very out-of-place here at DVXUser. It might turn out to be a great camera, but I don't understand why this forum lumps it in with the Big Two (DVX & HVX). RED has nothing to do with Panasonic nor has the camera even been released.

There is PLENTY of valuable info here for EVERYONE who is into video/film production. And believe me, I'm happy for anyone that can come here and find answers. I just think having "Other Camera" categories is a bit much, especially when there are other options out there and/or other options that can be created by some ambitious individuals ala the spirit of Jarred, Barry and John.

So, from a practical (and partially selfish) standpoint, I suppose I would like to see DVXUser become more focused (again) on those which it set out to serve: the DVX/HVX users!

Yea, while i noticed suddenly there were lots of people with 12 posts, bashing the CRAP out of memebers that have been frequenting the boards, for years, i still think we as a commmunity know who is serious, courteous, and informed. WE all pretty much know eachother. LAtely i have become very good friends with several members, and we have worked on a few projects together, and i thank this great board. WE are a SUCESS, all of us. Because despite a few bad apples, we are still accomplishing what we all set out to do. WE help eachohter, we encourage eachother. anyone who does other wise, i dont even take seriously.

I dont think i have ever seen memebers like, BarryGreen, Jarred, Envision, Aram Bauman, JAckDAnielStanley, Thartley, FlintMI, Terry Lasaster..etc, be discourteous to anyone. I actually after a while filter out everyone else.

Dont apologize for maintaing order. You did the right thing Jarred. WE stand with you.

I agree with the shift back to a friendlier site. As an XL2 owner (no, I won't go into a rant here), I am used to getting slammed for my choice, but I always appreciated this site for the energy and talent present in all of the areas. I found myself joining in the fracas on occasion, but it was always to hopefully provide an informed opinion, not to say "you're an idiot for..." as many people are quick to do.

I'm glad the "other" area still exists since dvxuser.com is still "the site" to discuss all things in video and film. I like the fact that all of this variety exists here. Frankly, as much as I like dvinfo.net, it is like a graveyard compared to this place. Keep up the good work guys. I am as addicted to this place as the next guy.

Let's keep the information and constructive criticism flowing! Going forward, I think that rather than deleting areas, the mods should ban users for being counter-productive and let all valid discussions continue. Isn't that better than losing potentially valuable information?

You know... the whole 2 cents thing.

I couldn't agree more. If you can play nice, you can play here.:)

The trouble with banning users for "being counter-productive" is that what may seem counter-productive to one person may be constructive criticism to another, but when it comes to setting the stage for a "my camera is better than yours" arena, you're probably just asking for mud slinging and nothing good will come from it. I found, and joined, this forum because I could talk about my passion with my peers who understood my camera and wouldn't put me down for the camera that I use, so I'm very comforatable here. If I owned a Sony and joined this forum it would only be to argue the virtues of my camera to the idiots that bought a DVX. It doesn't make sense to me to have forums within DVXuser that exist to talk about how much better another manufacturers camera is.

Great analysis Barry, you nailed it perfectly as always.

I too remember when I first joined the club about 3 years ago or so. While many of the same familiar, friendly faces are still here and always posting away, I will agree with Jarred's "Wal-Mart" metaphor. When I think about it, i've lately found myself almost overwhelmed with the sheer volume and variety of info, posts, and personalities on the site at any one moment. Almost too vast to even attempt to stay caught up. Not to say I won't or can't, but without a true focus and common goal, a community or society doesn't really have a purpose. This place is much too valuable and close to our hearts to see it wither away.

I love the idea of revisiting our roots and proudly proclaiming the common thread that got us all here in the first place: our love and affection for panny's fantastic gear... (and the all-knowing and omni-present Barry Green's daily nuggets of wisdom.... and pictures of Jarred in the bathtub.)

:)

I'd post a link, but don't want to make the J-man ban me before NAB.

Let's just say Jarred is as smoove as butta with the ladies :)

There is no force on earth that would get me in the same county as Jarred if he's in his birthday suit. I recommend to all DVXUsers to RUN if ever in a similar situation.
