Split Screen

I tried searching but I could not find anyhting. Sorry if this has been addressed elsewhere.

I am trying to get a split screen look Vertically. I need half the screen to show one event and the other half to show another. I will be shooting two people doing the same things but in different places, I will be using a timing system to get the correct movements down. I need the screen to be similiar to "24" and "Phonebooth"

I found a way to do it with opening titles and text but I need to split 2 events into the same framing - one on each side with actual footage rather than text. Please help this Novice.

Edward -

Thank you for this info! I was trying to do the same thing yesterday and finally gave up. I know this is a very easy thing to do in Vegas but for the life of me I could not figure it out. Worse part is I have done in the past. As usual, your help is very much appreciated.

That is very good, Thank you.

I do have another question though. By Panning and cropping or using a mask, will this degrade the image quality or make the image look smushed. I would like it to look natural. I would also like to create the ability to put the frames anywhere on the screen - Like "Phonebooth" and have them move or expand or shrink. Will doing this make the image quality go down or not look like the original footage that was shot?

As long as you're simply panning or selecting the portion to show, it won't look "smushed". Give things a try and I think you'll see they look fine. Now if you enlarge, it may look a little soft but the same size or smaller should do great.
