yea...filming a 21-step death-rail after we got 8" of snow in town last night....stepping over the rail to walk down the steps, holding the camera w/figrig in hand...*slip*....*smash*....oh crap....

pretty much landed on the lens hood...scratched it up a little and bent the inside metal-frame-deal a little bit....then i check the camera, and the focus doesn't work at all.... zooms ok but focus does nothing....turn the camera off, say a couple of expletives and say a prayer to my insurance company...turn the sucker right back on and it seems to work fine....got some gnarly shots of the riders slamming too....

this camera is built like a tank.

whew....

Glad to hear it survived.

Once, I was using my DVX on a freelance gig shooting for a local TV station who had sold airtime in their Saturday morning newscast to a car dealer. These spots were done live. So, in between the commercials the talent, engineer and myself were hanging out in the live truck (van with microwave boom). Suddenly, the on-air talent dude lets one rip. I'm talking Gorillas in the Mist!

The side door flew open as we all crawled out of a fog reminiscent of Spiccoli in Fast Times. Actually, we bolted out. Well, my poor li'l DVX was sitting on the floor of the van as we made our hasty retreat from the funk that was amongst us. In all the confusion caused by a desperate need for fresh oxygen, I (momentarily) lost sight of the fact that it was tethered to me via coax cable.

It was like slow motion and bullet-time all wrapped in one as the realization that I was tethered to my camera and was dragging it across the floor of the van occurred to me at the very moment I witnessed it drop from the floor and onto the pavement where it bounced up about a foot high.

Well, I picked up the camera and noticed a few minor scratches on one side, but it has worked perfectly since.

Needless to say, I jerked a half-hitch in funny boy's rectum (hoping that might stop future incidents) for his sophomoric prank that nearly caused my camera to be destroyed.

BWAHAHA!! the fart that (almost) killed the camera...good one...

i found a good ding on the figrig, so it might have been the first point of impact...woo figrig!

I love hearing stories like this, but I hope I never have to tell one.:)

I hope I never have to as well but if I do I hope it ends with "then my insurance company wrote me a big check"

Last spring I was shooting in a fly in community up in Northern Canada. I already had a moisture issue with my camera that made me extremely sick to my stomach. Well thanks to the folks here, and satellite internet that worked out. The next morning, my good friend, whom I hired to shoot with me opened my camera case, and the camera decided to dive out of the bag, and onto the sudo road. It was like it was trying to break free. I thought ****, now I am definately going to have to dish out another grand for another flight and come back. But the camera defied logic and aside from a few scratches on the viewfinder door, it was OK.

no doubt...i had just got insurance for my camera about two days earlier...$65 a year for over $5000 coverage with a $100 deductable...as i was checking over the camera i kept thinking how bad it was going to look to my agent when i tried to get a claim on the policy the very next week - especially since i kept asking her: "i can go off a cliff on my snowboard, or smash it on the concrete or drop it in a lake and it'll be covered?" heheh

on a side note: figrig probably saved the camera on this one - an added benefit is definately the frame of the rig itself for protective purposes...

Where do you get your insurance from? 65 bucks a year sounds really affordable....I have yet to insure my stuff (BAD idea, I KNOW I KNOW). I would be willing to fork down 65 bucks a year for 5k in coverage....any links?

i just walked into State Farm.... it's a personal property policy i think (different from renters)

i could only get this because i DON'T have a business license or a company yet so technically even if footage i get now may be used in the future, i'm not a business yet...with a professional policy (not with statefarm tho) you get liability up to like 2million, rental coverage, studio equipment coverage, etc... i've found these policies for about 500-700 per year
