Gateway 21incn LCD monitor...

Wasn't impressed. I got the 17" Sony instead. Much better picture from the Component in and fits in a Pelican 1550 too.

Jester,

I've got the Gateway and it's been working really good. It's built solid with a nice heavy base, no worries of it getting shoved around on a table on set. I brought my HVX into a best buy and spent a few hours hooking up the cam to lots of diff. HDTVs and computer monitors. In my opinion, the Gateway looked best for the price I wanted.

I'm using it for an on-set monitor in the field and footage looks great both in 720p and 1080 modes. At home, it sits next to an Apple 23" as a secondary monitor for editing; fits well here too.

I wanted to get the dell but I didn't like that you had no user controls without a computer hooked up. There'd be no way to change adjust the monitor in the field; with the Gateway it has a decent interface built in for adjusting.

If you can, go into a Best Buy and hook up your cam and see the image for yourself. Also, be sure to have footage you've previously shot on the cards so you can judge it better than just panning the camera around the store.

I second that on the Gateway 21". Well built, nice picture, light and rugged, for the price it's a great monitor.

I have both the Dell and Gateway. The Dell is an incredible monitor and DOES have controls on it so you do not need a computer to adjust it. I scored big by buying it on sale at Dell.com for $850 with 3 year warranty. I was doing Nascar on the road and we had a Dell 2405 and a 23" Cinema display and the Dell blew the Apple away, but it is much heavier than both the Apple and Gateway. The Gateway is my 2nd edit monitor and field monitor and we are very happy with it. The PIP is a nice feature and since we capture mostly to FCP, we look at the Camera and FCP in different PIP configs. For the price it's very hard to beat

Can the Gateway monitor display 1080p24 from a hvx? Also does it have component inputs?
thanks

Yes, it has component inputs.

Yes, it can display the 1080 24p signal fine but it may not be the full resolution of the 1080 image. In FCP, I believe the image is noted at 1440 x 1080. The monitor itself has a max native resolution of 1680 x 1050, so theoretically, you aren't getting the full vertical res. based upon the native image being 1440 x 1080 in FCP.

I've tried some tests, switching back and forth from 720 and 1080 modes while hooked up to the monitor. It's hard to tell all the time, but with certain shots/lighting situations, the jump to 1080 from 720 is visible to the eye when looking at the monitor. I feel the monitor is suitable for displaying both the 720 and 1080 modes but I don't recommend buying it until you see for yourself. Go to a computer store where they carry the Gateway 21" and hook up your HVX.

I don't have the Gateway and it is not available in Europe :-( - but I think it is very important to note that the Gateway actually has the Faroudja DCDi scaler/de-interlacer chip integrated. This is unique and you won't find it in ANY other Hi-Res computer monitor on the market. The Gateway should produce the best results of any analog source (particulary SD and interlaced).

I'd really like to buy this little bugger - damn!

pay $100 more for the Apple 20"...trust me, it is about 2x as clear and you get more than you paid for when you buy Apple monitors...(wish I could say the same about the lacking G5s, but oh well, at least Apple has great monitors)

Corusa,

The apple is definately nicer, more expensive, but lacks direct component inputs. It is DVI only; You need to purchase a converter that can be quite expensive.

Oh, I have a Shuttle PC which has component, along with RCA composite, SVideo, Firewire, Optical, SPDIF, etc...so I didn't need a monitor that had that option bu I guess if your computer doesnt have it, then you would need a different brand than Apple.

Well, I guess everyone who considers the Gateway should consider this:

- Do you want to display ANALOG SD/HD video sources on your monitor or you just want to hook it up to your PC/MAC via DVI/VGA?

If you want to do the first (I do!) THE GATEWAY IS THE ONLY CHOICE right now, you can't compare it to 24"/23" or other brands or what ever. ONLY the Gateway has a decent deinterlacer/scaler and ONLY the Gateway is capable of displaying analog video (non-computer!) sources in a decent way.

NO OTHER monitor can do this, you guys hear me?

I looked at the Samsung 244T, the Dell 2405, the HP L2355 - forget 'em for analog SD-video. Bad, bad, bad. Only other choice would be an HTPC or external scaler/di box in between.

If used for analog SD or 720p video, it is NOT a question if your monitor has component inputs. IT IS A QUESTION OF A GOOD SCALER/DEINTERLACER.

Now I'm feeling better. :-)

Illya, thanks for posting that but you proved me right. The monitors you've mentioned are either "low-res" (I consider 1280x768 low-res) or toooooo big (40"??).

I'd be MORE than happy to find an alternative for the Gateway.

I'm afraid as of today there is none.

I'm glad if the Gateway is the perfect choice for you.

However, you said size was no concern in your previous email

"you can't compare it to 24"/23" or other brands or what ever"

Nor, did you ever say that 720p was too "low res."

The gateway is 1680x1050, everything signal is going to be scaled, even if it is by a Farouja. Anyone working primarily at 720 resolutions will not be gaining quality with a 1680x1050 due to scaling. You're better off with a pixel-for-pixel image on the 768 (720 LCD) which will crop 48 pixels rather than scale EVERYTHING to 1680x1050. Pixel-for-Pixel at 720 on the Gateway will result in a significant amount of wasted real estate.

If you are working primarily at 1080i resolutions the case is less clear. But hey if that's the case, you might as well use a proper external scaler, then you can use ANY DVI enabled monitor with decent specs, (even really cheaps 1680x1050 LCDs sold by DELL) and have a far better image than the cheap DCDi scaler that is included internally with the Gateway. Then you can use the scaler for EVERY signal you can throw at it from HDSDI on down to Composite.
