Top 10 Films of 1999...

Is it possible (and I speculate) that the reason little HAley could not see Bruce all jacked up was that Bruce had not accepted / knew that he was dead ?

Not to me. That seems like an apologist approach to justify this blatantly misleading film.

Let me ask, what's it matter whether the Willis character accepts it or not, he's still dead and Haley still sees him? So why then can he see everyone elses' deathblow but not Willis'?

One apologist once said that the POV shifted from Willis to Haley throughout the movie -- Haley never saw Willis' deathblow because it was in Willis POV at that particular time. That was quite a stretch . . . which I didn't buy, the shifting POV.

Tell me that you are using hardcore Jonathan Swift-esque satire to show the ridiculousness of the Sixth Sense nitpick.

LOL

That's funny stuff. Just because I'm able to see that the whole basis of the film is a cheat, a cheap parlor trick you want to call it a nitpick? Sorry if I insulted your delicate sensibilities since you obviously like it.

It's not nitpicking just bad film-making.

It's a nitpick. I think the stroy is alot deeper than this simple chalking

A nitpick infers something small, hence nit. This is a MAJOR FLAW in the movie. Basically its tantamount to seeing the cards up the magicians sleeve. Its a cheat plain and simple and the whole basis of the "surprise twist." It's bad film-making and I'm a bit surprised by the lack of sophistocation in understanding it.

the whole film (sixth sense) is from Bruce Willis' POV. by the whole movie I mean every ****ing shot that he's in. there really isnt any change of POV really. it's not bad filmmaking. its a great movie.

i'd like to hear Filmmaker's 2 cents on this one

We welcome all different opinions in here. In fact, it it just that which keeps this place interesting

But if I hear one more crack like:

or the ever condescending

That will start becoming a nit-pick too me and your tenure here will be brief.

Thanks

I think American Beauty is one of the only best picture winners in the last decade that ages well and will survive the test of time. I think movies like Titanic and Gladiator don't age well and won't be remembered, but American Beauty stands on it's own.

whoa i diagree there Jeremy, those two movies are history you can read up on(although not the true history) whereas american beauty is a contemporary that taboos like smoking pot, closet homosexuallity, will be laughed at and will be mainstream, kind of like REEFER MADNESS movie is today, but certainly not in the same league in film making

I absolutely loved American Beauty; it was flawless.

I started a thread awhiles back questioning Sam Mendez's directing skill; American Beauty being his first ever film (Coming from the stage) and it being photographed so wonderfully.

I strongly believe it was Hall who 'DIRECTED' that film and that Mendez get's far too much credit for this Rookie effort:

The DVD has a section where you can watch the film in Storyboard format and not a single board looks anythign like a finished composition on film; not even the framing is close.

I am sure Sam has grown and matured tremendouly since that film but Hall was holding his hand on Beauty and Perdition with Deakins doing Jarhead.

I thought The Green Mile was superb (It made my list) it is just the supernatural stuff that makes me roll my eyes. I am not a big fan of that or fantasy stuff without it being plausible.

I am not familiar with the source material but always feel a film should stand alone and not rely on the books (even if based on the books; make sense?).

I think The Green Mile could have worked without the John Coffey Firefly thingy and just as a straight up drama of sorts. Agghhhh --- Cannot rewrite it.

Still, a wonderful film with great great greatcasting.
wait a minute John you say you don't like that fantasy crap? but love Carpenter'S aliens coming out of mouths and stomachs, and you love zombies! or are talking different genres and such? come on big man cough it up!

yeah, it was a joke to point out the insignificance of a minor inconsistancy in the broad scheme of everything a film offers.

Exactly.

The Sixth Sense wasn't about a boy who can see dead people, to some it may be, but the true story is about a man accepting his own death.

Remember what Cole said? "They see what they wanna see"? Malcolm didn't wanna see his own death, he only saw what he wanted to see, the split between him and his wife didn't get through his head because he personally believed she was ignoring him because hes spending too much time with patients, and not his wife.

Shyamalan didn't cheat, he actually did an amazing job on this piece.

Malcolm Crowe doesn't know about his death, and doesn't wanna accept his death, thats the whole point of the movie, dead people who need help accepting their death, and doing one last thing before they can actually 'leave'. Malcolms last thing was to help Cole, the girl throwing up was to show her daddy the tape.

Fantasy being:

Green Mile

Unexplained firefly thingys that suck the badness out and heal ...

or

Magnolia

Frogs falling from the sky

-------

I need plausible in my films. I can accept an Alien being and I can accept a zombie legion of dead; as long as the rules are established and followed I can dig it. I cannot dig stuff that makes no sesne whatsoever:

Firefly's and Frog's.
