Top 10 Films of 1999...

I absolutely loved American Beauty; it was flawless.

I started a thread awhiles back questioning Sam Mendez's directing skill; American Beauty being his first ever film (Coming from the stage) and it being photographed so wonderfully.

I strongly believe it was Hall who 'DIRECTED' that film and that Mendez get's far too much credit for this Rookie effort:

The DVD has a section where you can watch the film in Storyboard format and not a single board looks anythign like a finished composition on film; not even the framing is close.

I am sure Sam has grown and matured tremendouly since that film but Hall was holding his hand on Beauty and Perdition with Deakins doing Jarhead.

Callaghan

I thought The Green Mile was superb (It made my list) it is just the supernatural stuff that makes me roll my eyes. I am not a big fan of that or fantasy stuff without it being plausible.

I am not familiar with the source material but always feel a film should stand alone and not rely on the books (even if based on the books; make sense?).

I think The Green Mile could have worked without the John Coffey Firefly thingy and just as a straight up drama of sorts. Agghhhh --- Cannot rewrite it.

Still, a wonderful film with great great greatcasting.

In the best of all worlds, a movie should stand on its own. But can you imagine the uproar that will ensue from loyal fans when the movie strays...

If Peter Jackson had decided to stray substantially from Lord of the Rings, we'd have seen a public execution.

When a movie is made from a popular book, it will always be judged against the source material. For better or worse that is the case. In the case of The Green Mile, King is an icon. What better way to screw yourself than to alienate millions of fans.

Damn, I would hope that you'd say that...

 especially considering your twin brother was cast in a major role!!

cygnet74 ? A totally different style of films from one of your other lists where you list films no one have ever heard of !

Hey, all!

Usually I just lurk, but this thread compelled me to post.

You guys put together some interesting lists. Mine is fairly standard, but what didn't make it might be controversial.

Anyway, heres THE LIST for 99:

10 The Matrix = didn't like it, but it did introduce interesting techniques
09 Galaxy Quest = great for a laugh and who can't hate the "Grinch" aliens?
08 Toy Story 2 = I love those movies
07 Being John Malkovich = It made me feel a little weird. If a movie can make you feel anything it's usually good
06 Three Kings = Iraqui Ass Map - nuff said.
05 Arlington Road = just a few years ahead of its time
04 The Cider House Rules = I never saw American Beauty so I'll take those in the know that it deserved "Best Picture," otherwise this was it
03 Notting Hill = I usually hate Hugh Grant, but loved this one for some reason
02 Office Space = One of the funniest movies EVER!
01 Fight Club = Controversial. Riotously funny. Gross. Educational? Everything a GREAT movie should be!

Now, the two movies that have no business being anywhere near a "Best Of" list:

01 The Blair *****, errr I mean Witch Project = All they did was *****! This was the most boring movie ever. The only reason it made money was because of the internet. It was a gimmick and it should have been released on the net for free. I read somewhere that it had a budget . . . for what??? Food?

02 The Sixth Sense = I like Night, I really do. I think he's very talented. But when I discuss this film with others they always ask why I hated it. Here's why: It was predictable. I figured it out when others said I wouldn't. Also, when I figured it out I realized Night cheated. All the dead people that Haley saw, looked dead. That is he saw their "death" wounds EXCEPT for Willis. Willis' character was shot yet we never saw him walking around with a bullet hole. Night cheated and most aren't observant enough to notice.

There it is, go easy.

I agree with most of your top 10 but c'mon. Hating The Sixth Sense? Be happy it's me and not the Sheriff. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG) This was by far, M. Night's best movie. You say you like him, but don't like this one? That's unfathomable. Bruce Willis turned in one of him finest performances in this movie. There, I went pretty easy on you. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Here's eight. Love the first six (Straight Story and Toy Story 2 also make my all0time favorites list), the last two are good but inconsistently so:

1. The Straight Story
2. Toy Story 2
3. Fight Club
4. Three Kings
5. Office Space
6. Galaxy Quest
7. Austin Powers
8. Election

This was by far, M. Night's best movie. You say you like him, but don't like this one? That's unfathomable.

Nah. Sorry. His best movie was BY FAR Unbreakable. It was a super hero movie set within the context of the real world and it worked brilliantly. I think for most the deliberate pacing and flat dialogue delivery is a turn off, but it is his best and tightest work thus far.

Unstuck by order of Zeus.

10 The Matrix = didn't like it, but it did introduce interesting techniques

Did not like it but it ranks Number 10 as best of the year. What wasnt to like ?

01 Fight Club

Although I really enjoyed this film; I to this day do not get the Cult appeal.

01 The Blair *****

Agreed. Crap on a stick. All marketing. Brilliant.
The Sixth Sense

You cannot be serious.

okay, my original post (since deleted) was a disaster. had too many non-1999 films in the list. now, using imdb to confirm the years, and taking the time to consider more of what i've senn from that year... i present the revised list...

1. Rosetta
2. Ratcatcher
3. Magnolia
4. Eyes Wide Shut
5. My Best Fiend: Klaus Kinski
6. The Virgin Suicides
7. Buena Vista Social Club
8. The Limey
9. The Straight Story
10. Office Space

fight club is perfectly designed john, shots, imagery and storytelling wise it all clicks together as a barrage of image storytelling flying at you. i love it. i understand if you dont like it but at least you're not like most people who ignored it due to its title....

Did not like it but it ranks Number 10 as best of the year. What wasnt to like ?

I rated it as #10 because I'd be hard-pressed to find ten really good films from any year -- my taste-wise that is. Mostly I'm not a big fan of the actors -- Reeves, Moss etc... Just didn't care about their characters. The story was a BIT philosophocial, which I did like but mostly I felt it was a hackers wet dream. And, as I already said, it made some revolutionary strides in CGI technology which is great for movies until it gets copied to death -- already there.

Although I really enjoyed this film; I to this day do not get the Cult appeal.

I can understand this -- it's not for everyone. BUT FC is irreverant, witty and pulls the BS behavioral myths off and gets dirty. I love the industrial decay. I love the social decay -- it's real. I can't say enough good things about it!

RE: Sixth Sense
You cannot be serious.

Absolutely am. Did you not read my reasons? To recap -- Night broke his own rules. A mega no no with me. Plus I predicted it despite what others said.

Is it possible (and I speculate) that the reason little HAley could not see Bruce all jacked up was that Bruce had not accepted / knew that he was dead ?
