Anybody Well-Versed in Low Budget Sound Recording?

I've been trying to figure out how to get a good sound on a low budget for quite some time now, and to no avail. I just can't get a good sound out of electric guitar amps.

I'm using an MAudio Duo preamp into my computer, and an MXL 993 condenser mic (condenser, yes, but not expensive condenser), and despite my best efforts, whenever i try and do multitrack recording, the distortion gets too frazzled up so that the sound is equivalent of being in a blender. The only thing I can do to slightly offset this poor sound is shift one track slightly to one side of the stereo track or the other side.

Can anyone tell me of some gear i should pick up, or if i should place my amp strategically around my home or put up some blankets or something?

Thanks guys.

You should move this to the "Audio" forum here...there are some great audio guys who are very helpful.

Also, a search of the audio forum will yield a lot of great advice/information.

A few random questions / comments

What amp are you using?

Your amp could be overloading your budget mic.

I normally use an SM57 right up on the cone, and possibly a condensor back a few feet.

I would start by rolling off everything under 300 and probably everything over 8k or so if you are trying to multitrack your guitars. They can become thuddy mush very quickly.

Perhaps could you post a sample?

I'm confused did this get moved or is there another section I'm missing?

You will probably get more help on something like the Digi users conference than here since your question is more about music than film. But to give any help one would need to know a bit more about what you are trying to do. It is very easy to create mud and that sounds like your problem but I'm not sure. Is the distortion intentional and then not sounding good once you have a bunch of track or are you trying to get a clean sound and ending up with distortion?
I suspect you are recording too hot, but?? Give more details and I can be more relevant.
