flashing police lights in post?

Hi-
I'm working on a short that has a scene where off screen, a police car has its lights flashing. The lights will be reflected in the background.

Sorry to ask the question, but any quick ideas on how this might be done?

I'm using AE 7.0 standard, which I'm very new in using. I'm trying to educate myself on it as quickly as possible, but I've been asked to do this fairly quickly.

any hints or suggestions, I be grateful!

go watch what a police light does (or grab some video). make some red (or blue) images that mimic the size, shape, etc of the reflections that police lights make in photoshop and drop them into your footage on a frame by frame (or two, or three) basis using transparency modes. experiment with the different modes to see what looks best. it's not terribly difficult, but can by time consuming. really pay attention to how those lights reflect on objects and then try to recreate that. there really isn't a quick and easy tool to do it as far as i'm aware, at least not one that does it well.

I would grab a blue/red solid. mask it to some kind of shape. then drop it on the right blending mode, and add some sinus like math script to the optitacy

Sorry I can't remember where I saw this but...
I did see a tutorial online where a guy used a couple of small lights -- one with a blue gel and one with a red. A guy stood between them and just turn them off and on intermitantly. They were faking an arrest in front of a garage.

It doesn't have to be- it just has to look that way.
