I have to make something look...80's ish.

the distinctive look of miami vice was in its set and costume design. maybe a graduated filter here or there on external wide shots? these are the sort of questions that should be asked before you shoot.

I'd use the pastel-cotton-suit filter, the no-socks-with-loafers filter, and the neon-lights-everywhere filter. Oh, and don't forget the five-day-stubble filter. That's one of my favorites.
;-)

Purchase a MULLET-CAM. Used on 3 seasons of Miami Vice...Michael Mann's favorite. Stealithy attaches to the dangling follicles and creates a smooth as Colt 45 image...Pre Merlin, Pre Glidecam, Pre Steadytracker...Works in cars, boats and hurricanes. Also reacts well to neon lights in abondanded buildings were the bad guy always hides.

Thanks guys. A lot of help
OOOOH, you actually wanted help? But we digress so well...
Some of the Magic Bullet presets are sort of... Vicey... I guess. What did the show look like to you? All I recall were cool cars, clothes, guns, lights and really bad hair. No particular "look" comes to mind as far as how it was shot or filtered.

roll up your members only sleeves and do a bunch of blow. then brag to everyone how much money you made in junk bonds. make sure a flock of seagulls is playing in the background for sure.

get a new haircut before you start your project.

IMHO it's all in the costume, makeup, hair, and set design. Take a look at what they did with Kurt Russell for that 1980 movie about the US Olympic gold medal team. I absolutely believed it was 1980 because of the hair and makeup. There is very very little difference from this shot than the real thing. Look at that hair!

A lot of shows in the 70's made to look like the 50's failed, because no one wanted to wear a crewcut.

I was just watching Voyagers! (1982) on DVD. It's obviously very 1980ish by these factors:

1. Big hair
2. Washed out colors
3. Ultra cheesy dialog
4. High brightness, low contrast - very flat!

Watch Napoleon Dynamite. They did a great job with the costumes to make it look late 1980's. But they shot it with modern equipment and with modern techniques.

Don't make your film look too much like it was actually shot in the 80's or it will be dismissed as an old film! LOL!

Finally, something as simple as that.
