SuperDolly: Skater Dolly's Big Brother

Thanks for the the compliments. I've been very pleased with the way this thing has worked thus far. I've just used it in a couple shoots and should have the footage posted within a week. I guess I should address some of the questions and try to explain how its put together a bit. The dolly uses almost the same angles as the smaller one only the dimensions distance between wheels has been scaled up enough to accomodate a tripod. I measued the distance between each tripod leg and found it to be three feet when extended to the height I wanted. The second obstacle of course was transportation. A scaled up plywood model would be nice but also hard to transport. The solution was to build three wheel wells that are connected by rectangular aluminum spars. They are attached by a few bolts and wing nuts so as long as its labeled correctly it can be put together in about 5 minutes and will fit in the trunk of a car. The wheels I used are from harbor freight tools and cost 5 dollars each. The rotational portion is made from three plywood circles sandwhiched together. The ones on the top and bottom are larger while the middle circle rotates within the circular cutout in the plywood stage. I'll post some pictures so you can better conceptualize it. Its really about the most simple design you can get. There is some refining to do as far as just making it more polished but it works briliantly as far as what is supposed to do. In all it cost under 100 dollars to build. I try to get some more detailed photos soon. Thanks for checking it out.

Sweet merciful crap!!!

9k!!!! Geez that's worth more than my car, two of my three kids and my right kidney combined. OK. Maybe not the kids but the kidney's still a part of the deal.

Well done with your budget dolly, waefre.

You've inspired more than a few people with this thread.

sincerely,

ian

Hey this is the video I just finished using the SuperDolly or as is been dubbed Jon the SuperDolly. Anyway there are only a couple shots in it for a split second because the really smooth rotational shots were too low in energy to use in the video. I ended up only using the shaky parts from when the crane was mounted on top of the dolly. The Crane amplified all the vibrations which normally would have been bad but in this case worked perfectly.

I'll post some of the smoother shots that weren't used as soon as I get them converted to mp4. Thanks for the interest.
