How do you get "The Godfather" with a .3?

How do I light dramatically with a wide angle lense (.3)? My goal was to shoot my character sitting on corner of a bed in a motel room with "Godfather" soft lighting coming from above and some controled harsh light from behind for back light...

but then realized that the wide angle lense would pick up every light stand and light on that side of the lense...

How do you do it? How do you get this stuff without being seen?

Lose the wide angle. It doesn't sound like it's necessary for the shot. That's a specialty lens and not something you need to use all the time.

The Godfather was also shot with medium to long lens, not wide-angles, and certainly not with the equivilent of a .3x. So, how faithful to the look are you interested in getting?

A couple of times I have taken the much-scorned "fix it in post" route and have done a quick matte painting -- if the shot is locked down and the actor doesn't move in front of the offending light stand.

From my NLE (Premiere), I export one frame to Photoshop, and use the clone tool paint over the lightstand on a separate layer. I discard the original image so I have just the painted area. I import the Photoshop document back into Premiere and place it in a layer above the footage.
