Hey guys I'm looking to buy a new monitor for my desktop. I've been using the same 19" flat CRT for years now and I never had a problem with it until I bought my laptop. Now it just looks blurry to me. I even compared it to a 17" CRT I have it it looks blurry compared to that. Like it's out of focus, but after adjustment it's still the same. Everyone who comes over makes a comment on how blurry it looks. Considering I stare at it for hours a day I don't want to hurt my eyes any more.
So I want to buy an LCD. That would certainly help with desk space as well.
I'm either going to go one of two routes
But a cheaper 17" or 19" LCD for around $250-$300 like the ViewSonic VA1912WB. Or I'm going to go with a high end monitor around $500-600 like the 21" Gateway FPD2185W
or a used 22" Apple cinema display. One of the older ones with the clear photoframe style bezel. Which I notice sell on ebay for around $500.
One of the things I like about the Gateway is that the screen rotates for portrait view. Great for viewing websites. It's also a pretty decent size. But it's only 2 inches larger then a 19" at half it's price. But I really like that rotate option since most of my computer use is web browsing. I got to see it in the store and thought it was really cool.
The Apple Cinema displays are nice, always have been, I remember seeing these old style ones in the store and saying "wow they're huge" but it would be a used display. So I don't know how risky that would be. And it wouldn't rotate like the Gateway, it would just be 2 inches bigger, which in itself could be really nice.
Then of course there are the cheaper monitors. But they are slightly smaller and they don't rotate at all. The only thing they have on their side is a lower price. But the way I see it, I use a monitor every single day. I use it more then I would even use a $3000 video camera, and my philosophy has always been "I'm willing to pay more for something I use more often". So $600 spread out over the course of the next say 5 years is $10 a month. Not bad at all when you look at it that way. Which is probably about the life expectancy of my next monitor, as it has been this current one I'm using.
So what's your input, what would you pick and why?
